A catechism is not a textbook, it’s a reference book. And also if you are referring to the CCC, the church says the CCC is not intended for use by children.

Regardless, if you feel it important, being baptized, we all share in the responsibility of catechising others, especially our children, and when we are teaching them the faith, it is quite appropriate to use a catechism as one of the many tools available.
 
The Baltimore Catechism is a workbook so is the Faith and Life series and they have them for Kindergarten up to high school where I would start teaching apologetics. I wish the Catholic schools still taught Latin. Not because they would use so much at mass but once you know Latin, English is easy. My roommate in college went to Boston Latin and she got a perfect score on her SAT verbal section because she had such a profound Latin background. Even if she didn’t know a word in English, she could put the pieces together knowing Latin.
 
I agree that the schools and ccd should go back to focusing on traditional learning tools. It seems that the subject has morphed into morality lessons without any reseach tools as to why they are in place. I also think that more prayers and worship, learning about saints etc.need to be increased as well… The focus now is service, which is great but not a strong enough foundation -I also think that learning about the different religions in the world should be for high school and above-not elementary schools which I see happening. Too confusing for liittle ones. I know it is to teach diversity but a child needs to have their Catholic identity firmly in place before these lessons.
 
I would also love it if the Bishops got together and decided to either not celebrate Halloween in the Catholic schools because it has turned into this dark holiday but celebrate All Saints Day with costumes instead or allow Halloween but you have to come dressed as a saint, angel or someone in the Bible. I saw kids going into one of the local Catholic schools dressed like some demonic creatures from The netherworld. All I could think was no wonder why the Baptists think the worst of us most of the time. This is an easy one to fix, the demonic creature gives no glory to God. Angels, saints and most of the characters in the Bible give Glory.

Please provide some support/proof for your assertion they do not teach “the Catechism” and what you actually mean by that.

Catholic schools have religion classes in which they teach the Catholic faith.
 
I was born into and raised in the catholic faith. Both my mother and father were taught catechism in school when they grew up. I wasn’t taught the catechism, my husband wasn’t taught the catechism and I work at a catholic school and they do not teach the catechism. Yes, they teach religion, yes we have mass, in fact I would say that there is a greater presence of faith on our campus than most - but no mention of catechism.

Not all Catholic schools do, a friend of our family used to teach in a Catholic school in Georgia where they were taught religion, but it sure wasn’t our Catholic faith!

That is something that has to be addressed at the local level, then.

The Church itself has standards and requirements for Catholic education.
