Hi y’all
I may be proposing to a lovely devout Catholic shortly and I want to give her a ring with meaning, not just a rock on some platinum.

I Googled Catholic wedding rings and found nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions on manufactures or ideas for a unique Catholic ring? Is there any tradition for this type of thing? I’d like to incorporate the holy family, perhaps especially the Blessed Mother for our shared devotion to her.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

My husband gave a plain old rock on a gold band for me and I love it with all my heart. (Our wedding bands are both simple gold ones.) Later on, as engagement gifts to one another, I bought him a St. Joseph and he bought me a MM. We both wear them all the time.

Have you asked the lady what type of ring she might prefer, or asked someone who knows her preferences well?

I rather like my rock on white gold. 🙂

That is because there really isn’t such a thing.

No. I would say that the culture, not religion, plays a bigger role in the type of ring. In parts of Europe they do not have engagement rings, for example. They simply wear the wedding ring on one hand to denote engagement and the other to denote marriage.

You can always purchase jewelry of the type you describe and give it as a wedding present, anniversary present, etc.

I suggest sticking to something traditional and practical for your wedding. A gold band for the ring. The “engagement ring” can certainly be something non-traditional, but keep in ind that for daily wear the diamond is actually practical as it is the hardest gem. I have known people who have opted for some other type of gems but they found them not to be as durable long term. Perhaps a channel setting would be best if you go with some other type of gem.

I agree with the other posters who mentioned you should ask your lady what she would like. You can be subtle and just ask her preferences on various things or be honest about your interest.

My DH made me a necklace as an engagement gift because he knew that was something I’d like and ran various options by me during the time he spent making it. It made it no less special to me when he finally completed it and “officially” proposed. We both have plain silver wedding rings. But then I’m really bad with remembering to wear jewerly and also with loosing jewelry so I asked not to have anything expensive for fear I’d loose it! :o

If she happens to be Irish there are some lovely celtic wedding rings available. Some in 14K and some in silver. Some places will even craft one for you.

Perhaps some stylised version of a ring rosary?

Thanks for all the replies! It’s good to hear that the traditional rings are so well received- it makes sense simply because of what it represents.

I like the idea of a rosary ring but maybe not with the studs. Someone suggested three stones representing JMJ, which I like also.

I also want to have it blessed. Any experience with that?

You can get anything blessed, just ask your priest. I know someone who got compact discs blessed and the priest also asked for a blessing on the band.

I just wanted to add that maybe instead of a white diamond you might get a colored one?

I have a champagne diamond instead of a white because everyone in the universe has white, plus I think they are more beautiful than white. A champagne/brown would be much less expensive.

Or as I think another poster suggested, there’s no need to even get a diamond…you could choose a pink or blue sapphire, whatever. See if she likes colored gemstones.

If not maybe you could inscribe something personal/Catholicky into the band of the ring.

Just my thoughts. From what I understand, there are not “rules” to engagement rings anymore. Also keep in mind rose gold is very, very popular right now so def find out if she likes yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, platinum, etc.

Good luck. 🙂

Get something that symbolizes the both of you. My ring is very, very unique and will only be more so when we add the wedding band. But each and every part of it symbolizes something from the metal, center stone, side stones, swirl shape, everything means something to us.

And yes, I do get a lot of compliments.

Another option is white sapphire or moisanite. They are both very durable, very pretty, cheaper than diamonds, and neither has the problem of possibly being unethical. That is one thing I would be concerned about, as a Catholic, with a traditional diamond ring. You don’t want to help the atrocities that are linked with diamond mining in certain places, so if you are going to buy a diamond I would either buy an old one, one from Canada or one that is certified as conflict-free.

I would never recommend that anyone buy anything other than moissanite. It is absolutely without question the most beautiful white stone on the face of the earth.

The Book of Blessings from USCCB contains a prayer offered by a parent of one of the engaged couple asking God’s blessing on them. It also asks for a blessing on gifts to be exchanged, which could apply to the engagement rings. I was recently asked by friends if I could bless their wedding rings. We are all baby boomers, so there are no parents still alive. Although not Catholic, they respect and admire my faith and specifically requested a Catholic blessing. After consulting with my priest and getting his approval, I offered this prayer on their behalf. Go to foryourmarriage.org/catholicmarriage/catholicbeliefs/prayer-and-blessings/

You could also see if there are rings/gems passed on as heirlooms in your family or hers. My engagement ring is not fancy, but the diamonds came from a ring that belonged to my husband’s grandmother. They are small by today’s standards, but their history makes them very special (not to mention practical - I can keep my engagement ring on all the time and not worry about it getting caught in things! :))

Ask what she wants.

I’m a traditionalist at heart. I love my 6 prong, round cut on white gold. My wedding band is a simple tungstun ring with white gold and a comfort fit so I can wear it all the time.

My husband got me a band with sapphires and diamonds for an engagement ring, and a ring with a big (old) diamond and coordinating sapphire and diamond band. He said he wanted the wedding ring to be bigger than the engagement ring because marriage is a bigger commitment than being engaged.

That is so sweet!

My fiance (husband in 25 days!) got me a traditional diamond ring with three stones - two equally sized stones on the outsides and one slightly larger stone in the middle. It is meant to represent the two of us and God at the center of our relationship, and I love it!

You could always have a blue stone instead of a diamond to represent the Blessed Mother. Sapphire and aquamarine are two blue stones. There are probably others. Let us know what happens.
