Does anyone know of a Catholic equivalent of the Alpha program? Something that will lead people not just to Christianity but to the Church and clearly explain Catholic doctrines?
 
There is a Catholic version of Alpha that discusses why Catholicism is the one true faith. I think it’s taglined as something like “Alpha in a Catholic Context” or something like that, and I think the main difference is that when you’re through with the basic Alpha courses you do some courses about Catholicism on the basis of Fr. Robert Barron’s videos and Formed videos.

Hi ajac,

First of all there is no true Catholic version of Alpha. The so-called “Catholic” version is nothing more than the Protestant version with only slight modifications. It still references a Protestant bible, endorses private interpretation through the Holy Spirit rather than the Church, encourages the use of Protestant websites for further instruction, and improperly defines “church” stating there is not 1 Church.

I’ve addressed this many times on this site in different threads. You will see those that are proponents of Alpha talk about it being purely Kerygma (the basics of the faith) and yet ignore the many errors like the ones I’ve listed above. Then they will point out the many Church leaders who endorse Alpha and its errors as if that makes it OK to teach error. Finally, they will point to the success of the program as if Protestant churches can’t point to the “success” of their beliefs and programs. It is a colossal tragedy that the Church has admitted their failure of being able to evangelize their own by buying into a Protestant-based program. Shameful really.

Read the “Catholic” guide for yourself here: file:///C:/Users/bocker/Downloads/Guest_Guide_US.pdf. You will see that this program goes well beyond Kerygma and endorses if not promotes error.

A program that I have researched and has been used by Catholic parishes is called The Journey by the Paulist Evangelization Ministries. Very good materials including workbooks and videos…and most importantly basic beliefs that don’t violate Catholic teaching. And not catechesis, but just basic teachings on personally encountering Jesus. Here’s the link: The Journey/El Camino | Paulist Evangelization Ministries.

Our parish RCIA program doubles as an adult catechesis program for Catholics and for non-Catholics to learn our faith…this year we have 3 Catechumans, 13 candidates, and 7 others not taking part in rites, but in classes.

In last 2 years we had one “drop” attend the next year to enter the Church .
