First of all you need to thank God that your son is pursuing Him! Its sad how so many of your son’s (Catholic) peers fall away completely from God when they leave the house. As a convert, I’m VERY familiar with Protestant fellowship groups, and how many in them talk of intimacy with Christ and study the Word. Although its not the true Church, it is the same Holy Spirit that works in them.

After my conversion I found almost EXACTLY what he said about Catholic groups to be true and I had to hunt out Catholics who really sought a PERSONAL relationship with Christ. Even though Church and Papal teachings talk about having this relationship with Christ most Catholics I meet give the “deer in the headlights” look when you talk about living a Christ-centered life and study of Holy Scripture.

I personally found great Catholic fellowship and study in Charismatic Prayer, Cursillo, and ACTS groups. I also attend a Men’s Gospel Reflection group, which can be spiritually deep, as well. I now live in central PA and know that these groups exist in the Philly and western NJ area (maybe with the exception of ACTS).

Take heart as its Holy Spirit who’ll do the work on your son’s journey. I’ve known some who’ve left the Church, then met Christ in a personal way in a Protestant church and eventually returned to the true Church. Pray, pray, pray!

The OP has hit on something that frustrates me as well. Parish evangelization efforts in my area are so focused on “community” as an end in itself. Those responsible for adult education are so focused on the experiential approach in which people are encouraged to share their faith stories in small communities. I liken this approach to everyone sharing the small change in their pockets. No one really grows rich, and God forbid that anyone should come along and offer $100 bills with no strings attached, meaning a means to drink deeply from the Scriptures as well as authentic Catholic tradition. That is why I decided to build a website on Catholic evangelism and catechesis at: www.logosensarkos.com . Check it out. It’s got lots of free materials that you can download that are not only orthodox in the Catholic sense, but appealing to those with an Evangelical mindset.
