"Catholic" France: there is no crisis in the Church - *sticks fingers in ears and hums*

43% of French Catholics wish to see Benedict XVI go

PARIS - According to an Ifop poll for the Journal du Dimanche, 43% percent of French Catholics desire the departure of Pope Benedict XVI who has been widely criticized after his recent statements about condoms. If 54% want him to remain in the Vatican, 83% of the Catholics of France believe that the Church must change its discourse and its positions on abortion to reflect changes in society.

According to the survey which is to be published on Sunday, they also want the Church to change its discourse and its positions on homosexuality (69%), remarriage for the divorced (77%), and contraception (85%).

The survey was conducted from March 19 to 20 among a sample of 620 Catholics representative of the French population aged 18 and over, following the remarks of the pope.

From the plane which brought him to last Tuesday, Benedict XVI asserted (estimé) that distribution of condoms was not a means to fight the AIDS pandemic, but on the contrary it aggravates the problem.

The first CSA poll for Le Parisien/Aujourd’hui published on Saturday showed that the image of the pope had deteriorated significantly in France, including among Catholics.
According to this study, 23% of the French say they have a good opinion of Benedict XVI while that figure was 53% in September. There are now 57% who have a poor opinion of him in contrast to 25% six months ago.

Among Catholics, 29% of those responding say they have a good image of the pope compared to 65% in September. 55% expressed a negative opinion compared to 19% six months ago.

The declining image of the pope is also confirmed by Catholics who practice regularly of which only 52% (compared to 86% in September) have a good opinion of him.
The CSA poll was conducted by telephone on March 18 and 19 from a sample of 1012 people representative of the French population.

France Wednesday expressed “its profound concern” (“sa très vive inquietude”) in the wake the of the pope’s comments.

“These words are regressive and we are very concerned about these statements which call into question the spirit and the struggle of several decades” against AIDS, said Rama Yade, Secretary of State responsible for human rights.
 
by the fingers in the ears and the humming, 6, I thought you were talking about the NO members coming on the Traditional Forum telling us how wrong we are. I Thank God for their willingness to offer us such superior wisdom and Mercy. But I’d suspect the percentages in the article would be the same for these same members. What do you think?

This country which was once a bastion of Catholicism has been going downhill since they institutionalized humanism as a form of government.
 
I’m sorry if I offend anyone with this statement, but I have a very low opinion of the French. Who cares what they think.:mad:
 
Sounds like the French have caught the “American Disease”; or perhaps it’s the other way around. (Yes, I know about the origin of the term “French Disease”)

It is remarkable to me that Catholics have adopted the attitude that the proper approach to sin is not to seek forgiveness and make amends, but to deny that sin is sin, and demand that the Church agree with them.

Just so we know who we’re talking about, are we talking about the French Government or the American Government?
 
This problem exists just about everywhere, and in fairness to the French, while a big part of there country is going to hell in a handbasket, they do have quite a few traditionalist parishes. Comparitively speaking.
 
A poll of catholics based upon 620 people? Kinda lazy legwork don’t you think?

I do. France is a bastion of the traditionalist movement. It was France (prior to the Revolution) that helped evangelize historic New France in North America. Its contributions towards the Catholic faith are immense and immeasurable. It has a glorious Catholic heritage, a noble language, delicious food and an elegant culture. That’s why its loss to the Church is so particularly lamentable.

Actually, I think you are correct.

The predominant attitude in North America among Roman Catholics is a mirror of the French as described here.

The posters on this forum are an exception, and decidedly in the minority… and one does not have to like or dislike the French, it will not make any difference.
 
The survey would have been more accurate if it distinguised between those who call themselves Catholic and those who actually attend weekly Mass.

A pro-choice Catholic is an oxy-moron.
