I just bought some life insurance today from an agent with the Knights of Columbus. Now what would a person need to do next to prepare? I know we need some kind of sacrament and be buried in holy ground whether you cremated or buried. That’s about it.

You don’t have to have a “sacrament” when you die, other than reconcilliation which you can do at any time and should right away if you think you are in mortal sin. If you are ill, you can also be annointed, which is a sacrament. If you want to plan a Catholic funeral, you can do so with a funeral planner or by leaving your wishes with your next of kin.

drop dead?

id say besides having money to pay for the funeral (to not be a burden) then some people like to get their “spot” whether it be a plot or niche.

i personally wouldnt prepay for the whole funeral home experience, that money is better invested and then arrangements paid for later.

I agree.

Plan ahead.

Don’t prepay.

I thought at burial they put water on you and the ground. I read the sacrament for the ill was for people in hospitals or dying.

I guess the Pope uses this money to spend on charities.

When you prepay for a funeral, it isn’t to the Church. It is paid to the mortician/funeral director.

When my parents died, I didn’t pay anything to our parish. I paid for the cremation for my mom, then for the casket for my father. I gave the priests a stipend, but nothing to the parish. I was told that nothing was to be paid to them.

I meant the insurance fees, proceeds go to the Pope.

Of course, there’s the anointing of the sick before one dies.

At death, a priest can be contacted and can do the funeral service, mass, and cemetary if that’s what anyone wants. I think that’s what you’re thinking of is with the holy water and blessing. I think the priest can handle that.

One can offer masses for the person’s soul and prayers. My mother once approached me about this and asked me to pray for both her and my father after they passed, and I promised I would. I actually felt so honored that she asked! I guess in other families, it might even be hard to even discuss these matters. I’m lucky that it hasn’t been the case in mine.

I expect to be here for life so am paying, monthly, for a funeral plan so that, when it’s my time, my family hopefully will have that as one less worry! It covers a casket, or cremation, and a few other things. It’s MUCH cheaper down here than in the states!

The insurance policy was from the K of C
im aware of that i just wasnt sure how the fees or insurance proceeds went to the pope, as i assumed fees would go to pay policy pay outs and the proceeds would go to the beneficiary.

now i see that he gets his cut for charity.

i understand the posts now.

Well what I did was, preplan my funeral ,so that when the time comes, all is ready, they just have to bring me to the funeral home, and my love ones won,t have to worry about it.
Always go to confession,so that you are in the state of grace, when you die.

Generally the funeral home comes to the house or hospital. Your family doesn’t have to deliver. 👍

but if you plan ahead with a station wagon or van then you could cut out the transport fee.

Very true.

IF you have family that doesn’t mind transporting your body.

I would talk to them about it before assuming it was something they wanted to do.

I can say, when my father died, all I wanted to do was to go home to bed. I had been up all night. And I had only gotten a couple of hours sleep the night before. If I had been required to transport the body, I don’t know how I would have done it, even with a van or station wagon. My father was a large man.

I guess it really comes down to, “A friend will bail you out of jail. A real friend will help you move a body.”
