I attended a funeral at my church yesterday for a cousin. Now, I’ve attended planty of Catholic funerals but this is my first since going thru RCIA and regularly attending mass. I was just wondering-some of the things the priest said during the Eucharist didn’t sound “normal.” Are there special things said during a funeral mass during the eucharist itself or was I imagining it?

There are some special rites at the beginning and at the end as well as proper prayers. But could you be more precise about what was said (or done) ? The term Eucharistic Liturgy would apply to the whole Mass. By what part of the Mass do you mean “Eucharist?”

During the liturgy of the Eucharist??? Actually, I guess, during the Eucharistic prayer?

Yes, there are particular prayers to the funeral Mass, and some of them do occur during the Eucharistic Prayer. I don’t have either a Sacramentary or an Order of Christian Funerals with me, so can’t quote them to you, but I, too, remember the first time that I ‘noticed’ them.

There should not be much difference in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. According to the Order of Christian Funerals:

“168. The liturgy of the eucharist is celebrated in the usual manner.
[169. If the final commendation is to be celebrated at the place of committal, the procession to the place of commital (n. 176) begins following the prayer after communion.]”
(From The Rites Volume One, Liturgical Press, 1990, ISBN 0-8146-6015-0, page 981).

But the Roman Missal does have slight changes in the Eucharistic Prayers.

If Eucharistic Prayer 1 were used, the name of the deceased is added: “Remember, Lord, those who have died and have gone before us marked with the sign of faith, especially those for who we now pray, N. and N.”

For Eucharistic Prayer 2: “In Masses for the dead the following may be added: Remember N., whom you have called from this life. In baptism he (she) died with Christ: may he (she) also share his resurrection.”

For Eucharistic Prayer 3: “When this eucharistic prayer is used in Masses for the dead, the following may be said:
Remember N. In baptism he (she) died with Christ: may he (she) also share his resurrection, when Christ will raise our mortal bodies and and make them like his own in glory.
Welcome into your kingdom our departed brothers and sisters, and all who have left this world in your friendship. There we hope to share in your glory when every tear will be wiped away. On that day we shall see you, our God, as you are.
He joins his hands.
We shall become like you and praise you for ever through Christ our Lord, from whom all good things come.”
