Catholic Godfather for quasi-Lutheran?

My sister is pregnant and plans on having the baby baptised at her fiance’s Lutheran Church. She isn’t Catholic. It’s an ELCA Church, and they don’t really practice Lutheranism. I think she might ask me to be Godfather. If I was Godfather, I don’t think they would care if I taught my neice the rosary, to pray to the saints, infallibilty of the pope, etc. etc. I could basically slip Catholicism into her teaching and they wouldn’t mind. They see all churches as Christian, just think the Catholic Church has a lot of unnecessary rules.

What is the ruling of The Church on this? Documents?
Is there a dispensation?
What would the opinion of an ELCA church be?

I’ve tried to find an ELCA rite of Baptism, but couldn’t. Obviously I’m not going to make a promise in the ceremony that I wouldn’t be able to keep, or something I don’t believe.

Any help?

It may depend upon the circumstances, whatever is in the best interests of the child. If you’re concerned you can speak with your Parish Priest. I’ve stood as godfather more than once in a Protestant church and there were no objections from either side. Of course it is my intention to lead my godchildren into the Catholic Church if at all possible. Life is long and you never know what events may transpire.

In your specific case, I would think that it most definately would be in the child’s best interests to have a Catholic godfather. I don’t know anything about the Lutheran rite, but in these cases I’ve never had to agree to anything other than to participate in raising the child as a Christian.
