I hope someone can help me with this one!

I’m a Catholic and a librarian in a public library. One of the responsibilities of my job is to lead a Great Books Reading and Discussion group at the library. We use anthologies of readings from the Great Books Foundation in Chicago, started many years ago by Mortimer J. Adler and others. The group reads and discusses a selection or sometimes a whole work by an author. The readings are serious material and the ensuing discussions are intellectually stimulating. I would like to approach my pastor about starting a Catholic Great Books group in the parish, a group in which we read and discuss classic spiritual and theological works by great Catholic authors.

Does anyone here have experience in their parish with this kind of program? Is there a website on Catholic Great Books? I have Fr. Hardon’s wonderful volume, “The Catholic Lifetime Reading Plan,” and will certainly use that in planning. Any suggestions?

My suggestion is you start out by exploring the masterpieces of G. K. Chesterton. He deeply influenced many of our 20th century apologists, such as Fulton Sheen and C. S. Lewis. And his influence is ongoing around the world in such far flung places as Russia and New Zealand. Chesterton is a must read for any serious Catholic because his writings, especially “Orthodoxy” and “The Everlasting Man” are foundational for bringing the Gospel to modern man, as well as a sound Catholic world view to Catholics.

Is there a book which would help me to respond correctly to the following or similar questions? At the recent Lambeth Conference
an Anglican clergyman tried to justify the soft line on homosexuality by saying,“if we took the Bible too literally,we would still be stoning people.”

Fr. McCloskey has a good list posted at Catholicity.com
I’ve acquired several hundred great titles over the years.
If you were to start w/ the works of: Chesterton, Belloc, Howard, Weigel, Neuhaus, Kreeft, Sheed, Hahn, Madrid, Shea, Ray, Ratzinger (Benedict XVI), JP II, Baker, Groeschel., Keating, Newman, and the works of Augustine and Acquinas, you’d have a very good start.

Some of my personal favorites are: Chesterton’s EVERLASTING MAN, Belloc’s, HOW THE REFORMATION HAPPENED, Bennett’s FOUR WITNESSES, Neuhaus’ CATHOLIC MATTERS, Weigel’s LETTERS TO A YOUNG CATHOLIC, Kreeft’s ECUMENICAL JIHAD, Hahn’s LAMB’S SUPPER, Benedict’s JESUS OF NAZERETH, and Sheed’s THEOLOGY FOR BEGINNERS.

Please tell me if there any good websites to download or print Catholic ebooks? I am particularly looking for Divine Mercy in my Soul.
