Catholic Health Care Organization and contraceptive prescriptions

Question. What type of cooperation would this be? A Catholic health care organization states that its future well-being would be seriously threatened if it did not allow their employed physicians to prescribe contraception. So they set up a system in that the physician must act in a “limited private practice” capacity when writing prescriptions for contraception and must pay the portion of malpractice insurance to cover that. They must also inform the patient that they are writing it not as an employed physician of the Catholic Health Care System but out of their “private practice”.

Valentino makes a good point. It seems like the Catholic health care organization has lost track of why the Church has the position it does on artificial contraception, of what it means to be a Catholic institution, of what heath care really means, etc. Also, it fails to understand that the physician would be doing the wrong thing whether or not he/she acts as an employee of the organization.
One would think that organization would learn from Planned Parethood’s present troubles and a certain hospital’s troubles for violating the Church’s teaching** and the law**,besides some other rules. This cooperation must not happen.
The Roman Catholic Church apparently understands the importance of standing for something or it may fall for anything. These health care organizations and we must do the same. This scheme must be rejected for the garbage it is. Let us pray for them to make it so.

You are right. However, I think the catholics there have a problem with the Church’s teaching. They probably think they can remain a Catholic institution with this scheme. Will they be surprised. Some people never learn.

Is it appropriate to refer to these people as catholic if contraception acts as an abortifacient a significant amount of the time?

You could say cafeteria catholic I suppose.

Very sad.
However, I have seen similar things in the Catholic hospital/clinic I worked for. I reported the incidents. There are so many people who are NOT Catholic who work in the hospital/clinics that they do things I don’t think they even know break rules of the Catholic Church. It sure doesn’t make it right! However… bending rules for contraception is a biggie. They Need our prayers!!
