I’m not sure this is the right place for this, I hope it’s ok!

I’m working on doing a church history class for our parish. I have a set of DVDs from EWTN and would like to have at least a book for myself to work from to some degree for lecture and discussion. The point is to not only have church history—from the Apostles to the present–but make sure the connections to world events are made as well: When the Council of Nicea took place, this is what was happening in the world, etc.

Any recommendations for books? I have my degree in history (and I’m an accountant, go figure 🤷 ) so I’m very hesitant to purchase a book I have not read first without at least strong recommendations. If there is decent book we can recommend people purchase, that’s fine, but otherwise just for me and the other teacher to use as a reference.

I saw a couple on Tan Books website, but again, I am hesitant to buy without looking at it first.

I have “The History of Christendom” by Warren Carroll. It’s very detailed and may give you what you are looking for. “Triumph and the Glory of the Catholic Church” by H.W. Crocker is another one. I haven’t read that one but everyone says it’s a wonderful book. It’s a single volume so I may not give all the details you are looking for. I don’t know.
 
I believe that Msgr. Hughes History of the Church has been republished. You can find copies of his Popular History of the Church, but I’d look for the three volume set. He also did a three volume set on the Reformation in England. While it only goes up to Vatican II, as he died shortly after, it is quite good. Msgr. Hughes was a Protestant clergyman, Oxford trained historian, who converted to the Catholic Church and as his title implies was ordained to the priesthood. Another good but out of print book he wrote was The Church in Crisis, a history of the Councils of the Church, which was published just prior to Vatican II.
 
I’ve heard that the books by Warren H. Carroll are good, but I don’t know from experience.
