St. Nicholas!“Uproar ensues as not-so-jolly bishop strikes alleged heretic at Church council.”
I had a computer die on me 2 days ago and a link to an article relating to the above quote got buried along with the pc. So . . . a little more research and digging around revealed that this saint was exiled from dioceses on several occasions by several bishops - as opposed to one diocese several times.Priest exiled from his diocese for a second time by his Bishop, then forbidden passage to Canada by the Pope. Is the Church admitting to trying to contain a problem ? !
Concerning one specific attempt on his life, when he was poisoned: From a CNA piece St. Louis-Marie Grignon de Montfort -The Bishops of Poitiers, Nantes, St Malo and others strongly invited the Father from Montfort to leave the diocese. The saint’s spiritual director for many years, the Sulpician Father Leschassier, began to doubt him and in fact stated that Montfort was clearly filled with the fire of the spirit but he was not sure that it was “a good spirit.”
Father Louis-Marie from Montfort was misunderstood, expelled, calumniated, called by the Louis XIV’s representative for Brittany, “that great fool, Grignion!” Several times attempts were made on his life for there were people who were determined to extinguish the fire so that they could live in peace, undisturbed by the radical demands of the Gospel. Many of his seminary teachers not only considered him a failure but a blot on the honorable name of St Sulpice.
The opposition upset Father Louis-Marie. The young preacher from Montfort had decided that with the Holy Father’s permission, he would leave France and go to the Indian missions of Canada. When he arrived in Rome, he was granted a private audience with Clement XI. Montfort poured out his heart to the Vicar of Christ. But the Pope told him he was more needed in France than in Canada’s forests and asked him to return to his homeland to continue the great work he was doing.
CNA adds that it was while recuperating from the effects of the poisoning that St. Louis-Marie Grignon de Montfort wrote the masterpiece True Devotion to Mary, “which he correctly prophesied would be hidden by the devil for a time. His seminal work was discovered 200 years after his death.”St. Louis-Marie discovered his great gift for preaching at the age of 32, and committed himself to it for the rest of his life. He met with such great success that he often drew crowds of thousands to hear his sermons in which he encouraged frequent communion and devotion to Mary.
But he also met with opposition, especially from the Jansenists, a heretical movement within the Church that believed in absolute Predestination, in which only a chosen few are saved, and the rest damned. Much of France was influenced by Jansenism, including many bishops, who banished St. Loius-Marie from preaching in their dioceses. He was even poisoned by Jansenists in La Rochelle, but survived, though he suffered ill health after.
I found a recovery software which enabled me to get that link to an article back, and according to the article, St,. Louis de Montfort was indeed exiled from the diocese of Poitiers “a second time” (along with those other dioceses.) From St. Louis de Montfort , a Great Saint in Marian Spirituality :I had a computer die on me 2 days ago and a link to an article relating to the above quote got buried along with the pc. So . . . a little more research and digging around revealed that this saint was exiled from dioceses on several occasions by several bishops - as opposed to one diocese several times.
Persecution seemed to follow him all around . . . he must’ve been doing something right.Satan became envious of the good works of Louis. The devils subjected the priest to pounding and beating at night in his little room. But even that was not enough. The devils wanted him to be discredited and to look foolish. Thus came another trial for Fr. Louis. The Bishop of Poitiers bowed to the pressure of villainous powers so that Saint Louis de Montfort was exiled from the diocese for the second time.
