This is a very sad topic for me. I am an obgyn currently looking for employment that will allow me to follow the bishops directives for Catholic healthcare. It is an almost impossible situation. Last week I was turned down by a Catholic-employed group for a job in a Catholic hospital because I refuse to perform tubal ligations. In my recent research, I have found that 68.8% Catholic hospitals in California provide sterilizations. And that state is not alone, It is also common in Texas and Washington, among others. Tubal ligation has no indication except sterilization. Period! It is not believeable that the bishops do not know. Some of these hospital boards are populated by nuns. It is a systemic problem and is scandalous. Surfing through Catholic hospital websites reveals services that include many forbidden practices: vasectomy, tubal ligation, contraception, emergency contraception, intrauterine insemination, IUDs. And many of the Catholic healthcare systems now own physician practices and employ doctors that do all of the above. 1 in 6 hospitalized patients in this country is taken care of in a Catholic hospital. The bishops could band together and end this today if they wanted to.
