It seems that we are constantly discussing terrible music that is being sung at Masses throughout the world. It seems that we ought to compile a list of English and Latin Catholic hymns that could easily be sung as replacements to the awful, inappropriate ones that are so commonly used. That said, it is perhaps best if we left Chant and Propers alone for now, as it is best to start simple.

So, any suggestions?
 
I think a list of approved hymns would be very helpful.

In the spirit of the season, I’ll start with some Advent favorites:

I like the melody to Draw Us In the Spirit’s Tether, but, I wonder about the words:

Draw Us in the Spirit’s Tether,
for when humbly in your name,
two or three are met together
you are in the midst of them.
Alleluia, Alleluia, touch we now your garments hem.

As disciples used to gather
in the name of Christ to sup
then with thanks to God the Father
break the bread and bless the cup,
Alleluia, Alleluia, so we bind our friendship up.

All our meals and our living

that by helping, sharing, giving,

Alleluia, Alleluia, now we come with faith anew.

I don’t remember all of the words (the last one is nebulous, but I wonder about the hymn. It does have a beautiful melody and it is beautiful.
 
My favorites are Salve Regina, and O Santissima. I recently started gathering a collection on my i-pod. I grew up in the NO, there were no latin hymns sung during mass or at any other time for that matter. I have decided to learn as many as I can and teach them to my children.
