Thanks to you all for your opinions on this. Seems as though a couple of titles shake to the top of the pile. I will have to save my money and get them in the mail.

Of course “This Rock” for apologetics.

“The Liguorian” is published by the Redemptorists and is a pretty good all around magazine - some academic stuff, some spiritual, some conversion, usually a fiction piece.

Catholic Digest is pretty good, too. I consider it light reading - generally stories of conversion, spirituality and the coporeal works of mercy, with some health and living stuff, too.
Code:
Yes to This Rock, Lay Witness, and Envoy.
No to Catholic Digest & Liguorian.

“This Rock” is excellent, particularly in the areas that you mentioned.

I also like "The Catholic Answer’, which is put out by Our Sunday Visitor. Like “This Rock”, it has a Q-and-A section that is very helpful.

“Homiletic and Pastoral Review” is very good.

I also receive “Catholic World Report” and “Crisis” magazine, and like them both.

One of my favorite magazines is “First Things”, though it is not specifically Catholic. I highly recommend it.

I have been exposed to the New Oxford Review, and although they sometimes have useful articles, they spend so much time criticizing just about everyone that I can only take so much before I find it distasteful. Folks that most Catholics would consider “good guys” are often criticized without a shred of charity. I am no liberal weenie, and I have no tolerance of liturgical abuses, but szheesh—the New Oxford Review takes their bile just too far. It’s not an appealing picture of Catholicism that they paint, so, unless you want to complain constantly about how everything’s going to hell in hand basket, you may find it to be, as I have, just too much sourness.

I was given a subscription to Catholic Digest from my son and Daughter-in-law for a Christmas present. They probably thought as a new Catholic I would like a Catholic magazine. It was a nice gesture but the wrong one I’m afraid.
I am not very impressed. I’ve seen 2 posts here - one in favour and one not .
Is there anyone else with an opinion. Some of its articles are very non-catholic as far as I am concerned.

My favorite Catholic periodicals are, in order of preference: 1) *This Rock, *2) *New Oxford Review, *3) *The Latin Mass, *and 4) *Pastoral and Homiletic Review. *I would definitely steer clear of the Jesuits’ America.

 Hi

My ultimate two favorites are:

The Rock
Envoy

Although very expesive … they are AWESOME and put them between the electric and gas bill.

I can’t believe that more serious Catholics don’t know about these magazines. They are awesome.

My least favorite - although very good — is Crisis.

I agree about price. I started out when This Rock was a newsletter
for $12.
I hope that the current price stays the same for a long time.
Has anyone read The New Oxford Review. The price has remained $19.95 for years. It’s format is a periodical.

Inside the Vatican: wonderful photography; interviews with church officials you don’t see anywher else and restaurant recommendations for those going to Italy, not to mention informative articles on all kinds of issues .

Homiletic & Pastoral Review is excellent, as is National Catholic Register. U.S. Catholic and Catholic Digest are very “lite” and frequently disappointing.

This is pretty much my list, too but I would add Magnificat to the faves and steer clear of U.S. Catholic and Commonweal.

I subscribe to three Crisis, Envoy and This Rock of the three This Rock is my favorite.

I already posted my favorite (This Rock). Without blasting anyone I think The Ligourian is not orthodox.

We subscribe to:
  1. New Oxford Review
  2. Latin Mass
  3. The Remnant
  4. The Wanderer
  5. Lourdes
We used to receive Catholic Digest, but cancelled it.

Is the “New Oxford Review” still active?? The website given for them (www.newoxfordreview.com) in a previous post looks hopelessly outdated with the “current” issue being from a year ago!

Is this really a worthwhile and reliable publication?

+veritas+

The New Oxford Review is still very active, but the web site is outdated as to their current magazine available on line. However, this monthly magazine, created by former Episcopalians, is hard hitting, yet loyal to the Church. They never sugar coat the post Vatican II disaster we have been living through for almost 40 years. They call it as they see it.

Give it a try. I think you’ll be hooked.

The Rock and Crisis are my favorites.

While it isn’t Catholic, I also find Touchstone very informative.
