Chicago, Ill., Feb 18, 2010 / 04:32 am (CNA).- A Catholic man could face prison after violating a temporary court order that forbade him from taking his toddler to Mass. Joesph Reyes of Chicago is in the midst of a bitter divorce suit with his estranged wife, Rebecca Shapiro, who is Jewish.

Shapiro was awarded custody of their three year old girl when the couple split and has raised the child in the Jewish faith. Reyes pleaded “not guilty” in a hearing on Tuesday.

The arraignment comes after Reyes had previously received a 30-day restraining order forbidding him from “exposing his daughter to any other religion that the Jewish religion” after he had his daughter baptized a Catholic and sent pictures of the occasion to his soon to be ex-wife.

I feel sorry for this child who is being pulled apart by the 2 people who should being trying to make her life filled with love

I think this has to do more with the parents trying to hurt one another than it does about either ones faith

No, this problem has nothing to do with religion or personal beliefs or anything else like that. It has everything to do with two extremely self-centered individuals whose only interest is to hurt the other person. My real concern is for the child, who will eventually realize that she was used as a pawn by both her parents.

are you kidding me. the woman is jewish the man is Catholic. do you see a problem here?

i am Catholic, therefore i want my kids to be brough in my Faith. if my husband is a jew, he probably wanted the Child to be brough in their faith.

that is why the Bishops, today are emphasizing that Catholics should be marrying Catholics. there is a reason why the Bishops finally took a stand on this.
