You can still get Jimmy Akin’s article on Jack Chick in book form.

I know you can still get it. But as I noted, it’s not published anymore (those are secondhand copies due to it being out of print) and is hard to find now. Or, perhaps it would be more accurate to say it is hard to get now. You can find it easily on Amazon–but if you want to actually get it you’ll have to currently shell out $200(!!!) for a copy.

What led you to the true Church?
Long story short: was an evangelical Protestant as a teenager/early 20’s. Went to university to study history & philosophy in order to prepare myself to become a minister in my denomination. Once introduced to critical thinking skills, I quickly abandoned my Scriptural literalism in complete despair. Went through a phase of fashionable atheism as well as dabbling with neo-paganism & the occult. Became attracted to Catholicism through my academic study in history, but couldn’t bring myself to become “a Papist.” Became an Anglican instead…but that didn’t last because I desired the know true Church. Kept reading & studying & praying.

Here I am.

Wow, that’s a beautiful story! It must have been wonderful to come home to the Church.

I believed this for close to 60 years - I thank God every day for leading me to the Catholic Church. I, too, think back on those Catholics I tried to evangelize and wonder…what damage I might have done.

It is not your fault. When we look at those who commit such sins, unaware or aware of their actions, we are to pitty them while remaining prayerful for them. But all our hate should go towards the devil himself for he is the one who had his clutches upon you and many others which had caused all this damage. Blessed are those who break free from such a force.

Dominus Vobiscum:)

When I was a kid, my family and I walked out of Midnight Mass one year to discover someone had left a copy of the “Death Cookie” tract under the wipers of all the cars in the parking lot.

My Mom laughed so hard when she read it, and then explained to my sister and I why it was in error. It was a good Christmas.

Once introduced to critical thinking skills
I think once you step away from the anti Catholicism, the flaws in non Catholic theology light up. I’ve always been a practicing Catholic and am sincerely puzzled by the claim of ‘faith alone’ through grace without any effort. But I don’t understand why they are so angry and condemn us who in their mind aren’t choosing faith. Do they think that they have the power to hand out grace and we aren’t putting the effort in to convert? If I genuinely believed Scripture Alone and faith alone through grace, I would maybe feel pity or love for those who I deemed didn’t have the gift. But on the contrary, so many of them are incensed by our supposed lack of conversion. Very illogical crowd.

Edit to add: I think that’s why Billy Graham was so loved by everyone including Catholics. He actually seemed to really believe the tenets and treated every non-Christian as a potential Christian. He really believed that grace was a gift from God.

Catholic Answers could make thousands of dollars by reprinting it.

The Sacrifice of Jesus, true God and True man, transcends time.

The “it” in “it is finished” is assumed by the late Jack Chick to not need to be applied continuously throughout the ages. Merely completed. The obvious inference is that our justification would be completed too, if there was nothing to apply.

Yet St. Paul tells us . . . .
ROMANS 1:25. 25 who was put to death for our trespasses and raised for our justification.
Even anabaptist-minded people know deep down, some application of Jesus’ Sacrifice is necessary.

Which is WHY they frequently want to lead you in a tradition they call “The Sinners Prayer” although there are many variants of this tradition.

I would not take Jack Chich “theology” very seriously @FaithHopeCharity.

How did they misconstrue Church teaching?
They use all the standard exaggerations and misinterpretations of Church teaching – that we worship Mary and the saints, that we think we’re saved because our butts were in pews at Mass, that priests (not Jesus) forgive sins (in Catholic theology, priests offer absolution; it’s Jesus who promised that He would forgive those who are absolved), that people attain to heaven because of Masses and prayers said for them, that baptism has no sacramental effect. I could go on and one, but this one tract in the OP shows the length to which they go to mis-state Church teachings in a highly prejudicial way.

I think if I had known Jack Chick did an anti-Catholic track it would have pushed me towards Catholicism earlier. His screeds are infamously misrepresentative, even if there is a Tom Hanks movie based on one of them.

Jack T. Chick is one of the primary reasons I rejoined the Catholic Church.
I had fallen away for about 11 years and become an agnostic. I hit rock bottom, lost my girlfriend, my job, my home, and all my possessions. I was living on the streets. I used library computers for Internet access.

I had been fascinated by Chick Tracts for years by that time, and I began looking deeply into Chick’s claims, and saw how outlandish they were, but I thought to myself “Someone has got to be able to refute this stuff. Someone has to stand up for the Catholic Church! I guess I will do it!” so I began to study the faith of my fathers, and finding it was indeed the One True Faith, began attending Mass and Confession, and I soon was Confirmed 19 years ago.

Deo gratias!
