My wife and I are 60yrs+.I now have an erection problem and have as a result not always ejaculated in the vagina. In such a situation is it permissable for my wife to manually bring me to ejaculate. What is the church’s views in this area and what advice can you give?

You need to do your best to finish inside your wife. If ejaculation occurs by accident it is not a sin . It would be wrong to intentionally finish outside your wife.

The above is correct.

Actually, how can that be since there is no possible way for conception anyway?

I was told in confession once that “anything goes” between married couples. We have enjoyed an active sex life that I feel has been a factor in keeping us together and not straying. Is this wrong? Isn’t married sex for married enjoyment? I thought it was a reward for married couples to enjoy and a gift from God here on earth.

Unitive and procreative is about as clear as mud when you read from several sources. I’m probably the only person who finds this hard to understand but I try. It’s hard for me to understand how having sex only to procreate is good for a marriage in today’s society. My Catholic uncle and aunt had 12 children, barely could feed, clothe, and house them, beat them when he felt they needed it, forced them to attend Mass, ALL strayed from the church. What did having 12 children you didn’t need accomplish in this union? I can name other examples. Disturbing.

The marital act has a procreative and unitive message in how it is carried out. Married people use a language with their bodies that is a reflection of both communion( The Eucharist) and the love within the Trinity. That is why it should be carried out to completion - to fullyexpress that language.

They were not required to have 12 children. They could have abstained from marital relations either periodically during the month or for a longer time frame. You also can’t deny that they could have done things differently and gotten a different result . We have many stories of poor but happy families that were large . Many large families that manage to produce multiple saints.

My husband is the the 14th of 14 children in an extremely poor family. They wouldn’t have had it any other way.

Sex is meant to have a moment of unity with your wife/husband and is to end in an act of procreation. Foreplay and all that stuff is acceptable as long as it ends in an act of attempting procreation. When you say “in today’s society”, it truly shows a lack of faith in God’s providence.

Those childred were clothed and fed as you say. Regardless if it wasn’t what you or they may have “wanted”, what was needed was “provided”. The beating is far from Christian and probably what drove some away from the Church. I pray that I could have 12 children. They are a major blessing. And no… I’m not rich by any worldly sense at all. However, God has ALWAYS provided everything we “needed.”

I work hard to be a good Catholic but have problems with what I should probably practice with self responsibility. Hard to tell your wife I love you, lets hold this moment for 3 weeks! It’s very confusing for me and I’m guilty for these actions and thoughts. But by no means are they directed as an insult to God.

Conception is a result of marital relations not an element of it.
I was told in confession once that “anything goes” between married couples. We have enjoyed an active sex life that I feel has been a factor in keeping us together and not straying. Is this wrong? That is not quite right. Married couples have a lot of freedom in thier sex lives but each act must be both unitive and ordered toward procreation. Married sex is enjoyable but it isn’t a “reward” but rather a source of joy and pleasure (as the catechism says).
Unitive and procreative is about as clear as mud when you read from several sources. I’m probably the only person who finds this hard to understand but I try.
Unitive = for the good of the spouses and for the good of the marriage.
Procreative = ordered toward procreation. It does not mean that sex is only to procreate, it does not even mean that the couple must intend to conceive. It means that the act must not be contrary to the fruitfulness of marriage.

**It’s hard for me to understand how having sex **only to procreate is good for a marriage in today’s society.

Of course that wouldn’t be good for a marriage. But it wouldn’t be good for a marriage to have sex only to please each other either. That’s why sex must be BOTH.

I was told in confession once that “anything goes” between married couples.
Something told to a person in confession always carries two caveats. First and most important is that it is addressed to one specific individual discussing one specific thing and thus is highly personalized between confessor and penitent. It is not intended to be broadcast as correct in all situations.
Secondly the advice of a confessor does not change official church teaching.

The idea that “anything goes” is simply not true. Some acts are, by their nature, disordered and may not be condoned whether in the context of marriage or not.
We have enjoyed an active sex life that I feel has been a factor in keeping us together and not straying. Is this wrong? Isn’t married sex for married enjoyment? I thought it was a reward for married couples to enjoy and a gift from God here on earth.
Sex is not a “reward”, though it is obviously pleasurable in a loving relationship. Sex is a responsibility one to the other to be entered into properly and with the greatest regard one for the other. It is never to be abused.

James

There are a number of factors to keep in mind when discussing these kinds of things.
One is that Church teaching is to be seen as normative, that is, it is correct under all “normal” circumstances.
The Church’s teachings regarding sex are based on a couple of basic principles.
  1. That it be reserved to a couple in a committed, lifelong relationship (married)
  2. That it be open to procreation (physically unitive)
  3. That it be spiritually unitive and an expression of marital love - That our partners are not “objects” used for our own pleasure.
Individual circumstances can vary from these norms.
Such circumstances should be prayerfully discerned and discussed by the couple and also they can and should be discussed with a trusted confessor.

Let’s put it this way, when I confessed something because of my husband having the same problem as the OP, the priest didn’t say, ‘There, there, that’s OK.’ First he asked if medication would be a solution, and when assured that no, this was permanent, he made it clear that it was our cross to bear.

What if one spouse is HIV+ or diagnosed with Herpes. What to do about marital relations?

Abstain? Not an option in all cases. Marital relations after 60 produces no children and is an expression of love in a marital relationship. God gave this physical act to us to be enjoyed by married couples as an expression of their love as well.

“We have enjoyed an active sex life that I feel has been a factor in keeping us together and not straying” Jwakja I rather hope it is love rather than sex. Sex properly ordered is an selfgiving act of love, not focused on one’s own desires and wants. But since we are sinful humans that element is almost always there.
