Something has been bothering me about this thread since I first read it a while back. I don’t have time to sort through all the responses, but back there somewhere a few people were claiming that there is nothing new in the prevalence of pre-marital sex, that it has always been the same, etc. This is a lie that is promulgated to make people feel better about breaking the rules of the Church and natural law. So I dug up some statistics:

Father Benedict on EWTN’s Sunday Night Live has also talked about how in the fifties most of the couples marrying in the Catholic Church were virgins and the changes he has seen through hearing confessions.
I think the important thing to realize is although it is true that throughout the history of time, of course some people have misused sex. But in the past it was more clear to the youth that there were absolute rules that were being broken. Now many youth feel like they are being weird if they do try to respect their bodies and respect marriage. Things have changed, and we do youth a disservice if we don’t acknowledge that.
- In the 1960s, 25 percent of young men and 45 percent of young women were virgins at age 19;
by the 1980s, fewer than 20 percent of males and females were. - In the 1950s, roughly 9 in 10 young women got married without living with their partner,
compared with 1 in 3 in the early 1990s. - The percentage of white women married from 1960-65 who were virgins was 43; from 1980-85
it was 14.
