Hi Blessed Hope and welcome!

There is much that can be said in response to your statement:
why is the Bible not sufficient?
There are certainly other threads that answer this, typically with titles that incluide the words Sola Scriptura, which means “Scripture Alone”.

My comment to you is that the Bible declares itself to be
given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness
in 2 Timothy 3:16. However if the Bible were the only thing you needed, then it should say so. In fact it doesn’t.

Since it doesn’t, there must be information NOT in the Bible that pulls it all together so to speak. What is that? We believe that the Catholic Church contains the wisdom, knowledge and understanding of what the Bible tells us. It is not always clear. Acts 8:31-40 shows that someone with Scripture in hand needs someone with the understanding of it to guide him.

The Catholic Church’s teachings make sense out of the often confusing stories and literature in the Bible. It cannot be read simply as a book. The Cathollic Church teaches HOW to read the Bible. How to use it to come to know more about God, true, but in that knowing, how to grow closer to Him and ultimately become one in union with Him.

Keep searching and may God bless you!

Do Not Watch This Video. This Guy Is Spreading Poison! He Knows Nothing Of The Faith. He Believes He Is Infallibly Led By The Spirit BUT HE DOESN’T EVEN SUPPORT HIS OWN BELIEFS. IF WHAT HE SAYS WERE TRUE, GOD MUST BE DIVIDED INTO 30,000 REAL RELIGIONS. TRULY BLASPHEMOUS. We Know This To Be Untrue. Pray That He May Someday See The Light.

🙂 🙂 This is a most interesting thread…actually the first one I have posted too…as I just joined…and as I stated in my profile…I am not Roman Catholic…I have many friends that are, and I joined this to learn more about their faith, so comments that I make, please…are not intended to be arguementative…that is counter productive…I will say though, that I line up with the gentleman in the you tube.* I have been raised in a fundamental baptist church, and believe the King James Bible as the Word of God.* I guess what I dont understand is where from the Bible does the Catholic church get the mass??
First, welcome to the forums! 🙂

Your question seems to imply the Church should be based upon the Bible. Well, which came first: the Church or the Bible? You may not be aware of it, but the New Testament wasn’t put together until near the end of the 4th century. The Church existed centuries before then.
And why is the Bible not sufficient??* I maybe should aske that one in another topic thread??* Im new to this…so I apologize!*
That is a topic for another thread, so please feel free to start one. I will say briefly, however, that it depends on what you mean by “sufficient” and what you think the Bible is sufficient for. I should also add there are things all Christians believe that are nowhere to be found in scripture. For example, scripture nowhere states which books belong in the Bible.

If anyone ever tells me the Mass un-Biblical, I just steer them to Acts 2:42:

"They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer."

That is the Mass: We hear the scripture readings and the priest’s homily, we receive the Eucharist, and we engage in much prayer. Bingo. That is the Mass, all wrapped up nice and neat in one verse.

Seems like S.O.S. to me. I wonder when one of these guys is going to have an original thought, or are they going to continue to recycle the same nonsense over and over again? The one little difference is this guy tried to go old school and use the Baltimore Chatechism. WE don’t even use that anymore! I wonder where he gets his info from, because he knows for a fact that “Purgatory does not exist, there’s no such place.” The one thing that always gets me about Sola Scriptura protestants is that they use bibles that have been downsized by a human being. We should pray for this man that he finds his way home and stops spreading his nonsense.

The Baltimore Catechism is valid and is still used in Catholic Schools.

Maybe he should study the Roman Catholic religion a little bit more and he would notice that it’s nothing but the Bible,Old and New Testament.

This guy is a gold mine of ignorance. Of course, he finds fault with the Most Holy Mass but subscribes totally to the non-catholic conception of “being saved.” I know that Jesus is infinite in Mercy and Love, but I have to wonder that at times He doesn’t get just a little miffed at guys like this.

Hey Tim,I feel the same way about Gods Mercy but I guess thats where all of us sinners get lucky we just have to keep praying for people like this.

They cry out “Lord, Lord” but they sit on their hands instead of being obedient to His commandments. It’s somewhere in Matthew 7 that Jesus tells us what will become of these.

That is good to know. I will use it as I do my CCC
OK… going to ask… I thought the Baltimore Cathicism went out with the Vactican II? I remember all the books being pulled off the shelf as 1st grader and put away in parochial school and told they were no longer what should be used?

Probably because of various changes in discipline that were taking place at that time. Not because the theology had suddenly become outdated, or anything like that. Newer editions of the Baltimore Catechism, that take into account the changes in discipline, are perfectly fine.

Well they were wrong and that is one reason why the New CCC came into being, to compensate for all the errors that followed Vatican II. So the whole Catholic world would know what the Church truly believes and teaches. Vatican II was never in error but what some did to it afterwards was in grave error. The Baltimore Catechism is and always has been in line with Church teaching so can still be used as" jmcrae" has stated. God Bless, Memaw
