Catholic Misbehavior?

I don’t see that this is offensive at all. There’s a Renaissance painting of the Coronation of the Blessed Virgin where she’s very clearly kneeling before her Son as He places the crown on her head. As far as I can tell, neither one is offensive. Mary might be the Queen of Heaven, but she’s not a complete equal to her Son: she’s not a goddess. She might be immaculate, but she’s still a human being and therefore her Son’s creation, meaning she’s still more or less His subject.
True, the point is she IS Queen of heaven and earth, including queen of the other saints. She is not their equal nor merely first among equals.

If those Catholics are guilty of anything it is of having thin skin. It’s a non-Catholic play, what did they expect? Did they go there with the intention of protesting?

I too am amazed that Mary was even there in the first place!

It kind of sounds like a lot is being read into the situation here. Are you absolutely certain that the intention was to demean the Blessed Virgin Mary? Without more detail it’s really hard to say anything here.

If a Catholic goes to one of these events all bets are off. It isn’t right for us to take pot-shots at these other Christians because they don’t share all our beliefs, if they did they would be “us” not “them”. You cannot expect every other religion to share our beliefs or respect for Our Lady or, depending on the other religion, any other aspect of our faith for that matter. Don’t go to these performances if you think you might be put off, it’s that simple.
Well you go there, you see something you don’t like, you get up and leave. If you can do it for a movie or any other play, what is so bad about doing it in this production?

It conveys the message that the person’s were offended. I think even if we exclude the specific issue here, walking out is the right thing to do.

I honestly think people need a lot more integrity these days. Part of maintaining that integrity is in showing ones disagreement when one does not approve. Nothing wrong with what happened in my opinion.

=GoodTony;8738467]Lancaster County, PA is known for its Amish and Mennonite heritages. However, the fastest growing churches, at this time, are the independent bible churches,. Some of these churches have several thousand members each.
Sight and Sound is a nationally recognized non-Catholic Christian theatre presenting live bible-based plays. At the end of one of the plays, Jesus is seated in heaven and the saints of that particular play come to Jesus, bend a knee and then stand on one side of Jesus. The Blessed Virgin Mary went forward, in line with the other saints, bent her knee and then stood alongside Jesus with the other saints.
As soon as Mary did this, about a dozen Catholic senior citizens stood up and stormed out of the theatre.
Does this constitute Catholic misbehavior during a non-Catholic Christian event?
POOR Catechesis YES!

Poor behavior; I think not:o

I lived in York for several years:)

ARE U SURE THESE WERE CATHOLICS AND not MERELY CHRISTANS:shrug:

God Bless,
Pat

Any Catholic should have enough brains to understand that it would be absurd to expect a free from error doctrinal Catholic representation in a protestant play, on the contrary a Catholic should expect doctrinal differences. Going to the movies is comparing apples to oranges unless you go to an XXX rated movie and then you walk out because you are disappointed by the pornography, in that case you should have thought before acting.

This 👍

I doubt there was disrespect for the BVM intended. They are presenting her as they have been taught, according to their doctrine. Why would a Catholic going to a Protestant-produced play expect anything else? I think walking out like that en masse was rude.

I think I’ve been to one of those plays when I was a teen. There was one on Noah and there were hundreds of animals on the stage.

Here are some scenes.

They are especially great for kids and are mostly based on bible stories, so there shouldn’t be anything for a Catholic to object to when it comes to the Bible stories themselves…

But knowing ahead of time that this is a fundamentalist production, is it reasonable to expect see Mary crowned as Queen of Heaven?

Come on people.
I feel bad for the animals involved in that play. They have to be hauled around the country and probably endure circus like training techniques for our unnecessary entertainment. That one bird was trying to fly but couldn’t, I guess they clipped his wings, debilitating him. That must be frustrating to be a bird that can’t fly.

So if you attend a Liturgy at a parish that engages in more modern interpretation than you are accustomed to you would get up and leave? This group displayed no lack of integrity, the ones who left certainly did; what way to portray Catholicism to non-Catholics! I consider this akin to a little foot-stomping tantrum, immature and well outside the realm of charitable Christian behavior.

When my non-Catholic friends, most are Lutheran and some are non-denominational Bible, invite me to an event I consider it an honor. I would never be so crude as to walk out on them unless they did something obscene to slander Catholicism, they would not and neither did the group in question.

Hmph. Nobody shows the Blessed Virgin as not being special. They did the right thing as it shows that they love the Blessed Virgin as their own Queen and Mother.😃

Actually, clipping a bird’s wings just cuts back the flight feathers (which eventually grow back), so the bird doesn’t stay airborne for long, just flutters a bit and then drifts to the floor. We’ve had our parakeets’ wings clipped many times, and after a few trims, they get used to it.

You are trying to equate two different things here. With a Liturgy, I stay because I respect the Liturgy. But yes, it by ‘modern’ you mean ‘wrong’, then after the Liturgy, I will probably never attend the same parish unless I can’t find one.

But in the case of the Play, there is nothing intrinsic about the play that requires my respect. So I see nothing wrong with walking out on it.

See, you are so worried about portraying yourself that you are willing to compromise the truth.

Walking out shows disagreement. Do you stand by watching Gay parades, desecration of the Eucharist etc just to promote a nice view? I hope not. So same here.

You know at the end of all this, you are you and I am me. I would be the one who walks out. You will be the one who stays behind to answer the questions your friends will ask on why I walked out.

So think of it as me being the person who gives you the opening to start your dialogue and explain the Catholic faith to your friends 👍
