Do you mean the Roman Missal? The Roman Missal, to put it simply, is the book that the Priest uses to celebrate Mass. Currently, there are two editions of the Roman Missal that Priests can choose from, 1962 and 2002. Both are in Latin, but the 2002 Roman Missal is the one that is translated into other languages…so an “English” Mass is an English translation of the newer Missal (I think we’re in the process of waiting for the 2002 Missal to be translated). Here in the United States, the 2002 Roman Missal is generally called the “Sacramentary,” but this is NOT the correct name and will be done away with very soon.

Yes, the Priest is to use the Missal, either the 1962 or 2002. He is NEVER allowed to make things up, except for where the Missal may allow for this (Homily, announcements, Prayer of the Faithful), and if he is allowed to add his own stuff, it has to be within Church teachings.

They are supposed to follow the General Instruction of the Roman Missal or GIRM. Google GIRM and there is an online indexed version that you can research which is also cross referenced to the Code of Cannon Law.

Another question I have. The missal I bought has both a gold and a red cloth bookmark. Is there any particular meaning to the different colors?

I’d assume that you can use the ribbons however you like. My missal has different ribbons and sometimes I use the one that’s the color of the day to mark where the propers for that day start. But I can’t say I’m that organized all the time.

Try it out until you find a system that works for you.
