I think a truely Catholic society that really practiced the faith as it is taught and adhered to all the teachings of the Church would be great.
The problem is not in what the Church teaches but the fact that there are many folks who do not abide by the rules. There is nothing wrong with the principles or teachings of the Church. Folks who would break Catholic rules would just as easily break any other rules.
Unfortunately the idea of Hell or Purgatory is not an effective deterrent to someone willing to risk punishment in the afterlife to subvert the system in this life.
