In doing some research on the fundamental differences between the Catholic religion and the Protestant faith, I have read many times from the Catholic side that Protestants believe in “Catholic myths”.

What do you personally believe are some of the most “ridiculous” of these myths. Please cite evidence for your belief.

Also, are there any myths or misconceptions that have actually made you think, “they kind of have a point there…”.

Thanks in advance for your (name removed by moderator)ut and honesty!
Maybe the best thing would be for you to list all the misconceptions you have about the Catholic Church and then we could clarify them for you.

What is the evidence for her "Glorious Assumption?"

The evidence is that the Church has always taught it, and never refuted it.
Please forward your evidence that “the Church” always taught it.

We would like to see it.

From the Apostolic era forward, please show that this was always taught by the church.

I pray you are not citing evidence that does not exist.

Wow, Dave, what a great site! Wonderful wallpaper, too.

I just read your Letters to a teenage skeptic. I hope they will continue. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to have this peek into a reasoned and level-headed response to a young person who is taken seriously by his dad. Lots of great links, too.

One of my sons (soon to be 21) is persuing a degree in elec. engineering and still living at home. He believes and attends Mass but I can’t say he takes it real seriously; evidence: not always careful to observe the fast before communion or sometimes missing Mass when mom hasn’t reminded him to go. I may direct him to your site and see what happens.

Another son (31) has been out of the CHurch for some time, and vascillates on whether there is discernable objective Truth or not; last time we talked, he said he only believed what he could see, hear, touch or feel. I wish, or rather, pray, that we could get deeper into that sometime, but I am still learning the language and logic. Your skeptic letters help a lot there.

God bless,
Mimi

VociMike, I hate to point it out, but this is circular reasoning. Do you have some other evidence? Please don’t think I am attacking you…just simply pointing it out. Thanks much:)

The one that really gets my cookies steamed is the myth that the Church simply adopted pagan rituals, feast days, symbols and mythology to create the religion.

I had a friend who didn’t consider herself protestant, but just simply a Christian, and she was looking seriously into the Catholic Church when she read on the net that the Church is just paganism repackaged.

That was enough for her. Now she’s praying for me to leave this bed of lies and become a real Christian.

Oh well…

However, how do I know they are myths if I believe them to be true? I figure Catholic apologetics have heard it all so that is why I “left it open”.

Interesting and helpful stuff so far!

If you want to start another thread I’ll chime in and show that it’s not circular reasoning at all. But it’s not good form to derail a thread from its original direction.

I have referred to and studied
Refuting the Attack on Mary by Fr. Matteo (I recall that this is his ‘pen name’).

You can purchase it here:
shop.catholic.com/cgi-local/SoftCart.exe/online-store/scstore/p-CB012.html?E+scstore
Why do Catholics believe that Mary remained a virgin after the birth of Jesus?
Why is she believed to be immaculately conceived?
Was Mary assumed into heaven?
Why is she called Mother of God?
Why is she called Queen of Heaven?
Are Catholic teachings on Mary unbiblical?
Fr. Mateo also points out the errors of logic and fact committed by many anti-Catholics as they mount attacks on the Blessed Mother.

Remarkably concise, this work powerfully explains how to defend Marian doctrine. After reading it, you will be fully equipped to defend the truth of Catholic teaching whenever you are called upon to refute an attack on Mary.
Code:
It is small but thorough (IMO), only 101 pgs.
That's a lot for about $10.00!

God Bless,
Mimi

“Catholics are against contraception because pope wants more Catholics so he can be richer.”
:rotfl: Oh my gosh, that’s hysterical. I never heard that one before. That’d be an awfully roundabout way to get money, wouldn’t it?

And then there’s “Catholics eat fish on Friday because one pope had a brother who was a fish dealer and the pope wanted to send more business his brother’s way”

I really want to keep my attention on one thread at a time…do you mind PM’ing me what you got? I really am quite interested…

“Protestants do not hate Catholicism, they hate what they believe Catholicism is. If Catholicism were what Protestants believe it is, then Catholics would hate it to.”

The OP asked for evidence, but you provided none.

I know merely the claim may be considered “evidence” to you, but in my dictionary there is a different definition.

My inquuiry is exactly in line with the OP.

“Catholic Myths”–Here are just a few of my “favorites”:
  1. The Church has put Mary on an even plane with Jesus
  2. The Pope is ALWAYS infallible
  3. The Church teaches that only Catholics can be saved
  4. All of the Church’s teachings or opinions should be regarded as
    dogma.
Surprisingly, many Catholics believe some of these. The Church’s position on these and other issues is, and has been, well-documented. But, we live in an era in which it’s “fashionable” to attack the RCC.

Also, much Church teaching relies upon inspired revelation or inspired tradition. That, in turn, relies heavily upon an individual’s faith. But, “faith” is a dirty word to many people. To them, it smacks of a lack of intelligence. And, as we all know our vast, cool intellects can figure out everything.

You can post in red and bold all you want, but I’m not going to help derail this thread at your insistence.
