You can post in red and bold all you want, but I’m not going to help derail this thread at your insistence.
Ahhhhh.

So PBPGNFWMY asks for evidence of the Assumption and it is OK because you don’t give any.

I ask for evidence again and all of a sudden I am “derailing” the thread.

Okey Dokey.

Yup - the topic of this thread isn’t the Assumption or evidence for such. There are and have been loads of threads around on those topics.

Hello,
And then there’s “Catholics eat fish on Friday because one pope had a brother who was a fish dealer and the pope wanted to send more business his brother’s way”
Hey, when I was a kid, I thought that we ate fish on Friday because the Apostles were fishermen and wanted to boost business.

And when I was preparing for my first Confession and we learned the Act of Contrition “O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended You…”, I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why we had to go to Confession if we were hardly sorry for our sins.

Glad we straightened that out.

I always wanted to know why we were not to be led into Penn Station. . .

Hello,

Hey, when I was a kid, I thought that we ate fish on Friday because the Apostles were fishermen and wanted to boost business.
Interesting theory - except for the little fact that we’re not required to eat fish - not ever. We are simply to abstain from meat. Plenty of alternatives - vegetables, eggs, cheese and so on.

Hello,

As has been said before, there are those myths that are due to misconceptions and ignorant misunderstandings of the Catholic Faith, and there are outright pernicious lies.

Of this first group, misunderstandings, there are those such as:

Catholics worship Mary
Catholics worship statues and Saints
Catholics think that works merit salvation
Catholics worship cookies (Eucharist)
Catholics re-crucify Christ as every Mass
Catholics worship the Pope
Catholics are forbidden to read the Bible
Catholics call Priests Father (o.k. this one is true, but the misunderstanding is that they think we shouldn’t do this)
etc.
etc.
etc.

Of the second group, lies, there are those such as:

Pope Joan
Jesuit Oath/Oath of the Knights of Columbus
Catholics are secretly trying to take over the world
The first Pope was Constantine, who created the Catholic Church
The Catholic Church has covered up the true Gospel of Jesus
The Catholic Church has persecuted and covered up all traces of Jesus’ line of descendants from his marriage to Mary Magdalene
Other idiotic and moronic nonsense from books of one Dan Brown
etc.
etc.
etc.

Yeah, but no one told me that when I was a kid. 😃

Sorry guys, I think actually his line of questioning did follow the direction of our thread…let’s play nice. God is watching;)

I replied to your “evidence” in your new thread, Vocimike, but I don’t see it…maybe I forgot to post? or maybe it was deleted? Not sure…

(Edited)
We can never be certain whether the questioner really is an entrenched persecutor or a naive truth seeker or something in between. Whatever he is, our only possible response is to calmly, patiently, respectfully and truthfully answer his questions (and yes I know my patience has failed on occasions). If we don’t, then he will go away thinking “I asked a question that the Catholics weren’t able to answer, or were too embarrased to answer, or they flamed me because they were ashamed because my question exposed the truth about them.”

IMO fundamentally the worst and most prevalent myth about Catholics is that Catholicism is put together just like just about every other religion. Or like most people do today when choosing their personal religious beliefs. That is, that Popes/bishops etc have sat down and thought “hmm what features would I like in **my ideal **religion?” Resulting in an eclectic grab-bag of unrelated doctrines and practices that “seem like a good idea”.

Hence many people’s (often honest) amazement that the Catholic Church does **not change **its doctrines to embrace things which seem “obviously correct” to most people in contemporary Western society - contraception, women priests, sodomy etc. They just don’t understand that we can’t change our doctrines, howver much we might want to, because they’re not really our doctrines. They’re the doctrines we **received **from God.

VociMike, I hate to point it out, but this is circular reasoning. Do you have some other evidence? Please don’t think I am attacking you…just simply pointing it out. Thanks much:)
The exact anti-Catholic sentiment I am referring too.

You came here to us. You prove your point. Its your Protestant reasoning that is circular, not ours.

Why don’t you prove the Rapture. Or show us how Faith without works is not dead. Show us Sola Scriptura is valid.

Or better yet. I will stick with the thread. Disprove the Assumption of Mary. Show us how we are wrong.

The burden of proof is on you. You came here to prove some point, no matter how “innocent” your intentions are. So do it.

This thread has been pruned of about 13 uncharitable and derailing posts and/or others have been edited to remove quotes of deleted posts.

Please remain on topic and maintain the very soul of charity in your responses or expect my intervention.

“Catholics are against contraception because pope wants more Catholics so he can be richer.”

The fact of the matter is that Catholic moral teaching, especially the Catholic moral teaching about contraception, is a slam-dunk against people who think the main issue in the Protestant/Catholic debate is whether or not you can call a man “father” (even your own father).

Notice on the contraception threads that Protestants just sort of whimper off to another “call no man father” thread.

The moral teachings of the Catholic Church cannot be refuted from the bible.
Or how about the Catholics are against birth control so that catholics will have many children, and will be able to give at least a son to the religious life/priesthood and/or a daughter to the religious life.

In doing some research on the fundamental differences between the Catholic religion and the Protestant faith, I have read many times from the Catholic side that Protestants believe in “Catholic myths”.

What do you personally believe are some of the most “ridiculous” of these myths. Please cite evidence for your belief.
Well, the Jack Chick myths are really the most ridiculous ones (lets pray for this man).

How about this one? Catholics worship pagan gods and the IHS symbol you often see on the hosts actually means Isis, Horus and Seb - the ancient Egyptian pagan gods.
Also, are there any myths or misconceptions that have actually made you think, “they kind of have a point there…”.
Yes, they made me think but in a different way then you expect. I was brought up as Catholic, but I really only did everything because I stayed with my mother. I believed in God, associated myself with Catholicism but God had no place in my life. In fact when I moved away and started going to a university I stopped going to church completely.

Then I started discussing religion with a protestant and he started attacking catholicism. Some of it were clear misconceptions so I started defending it yet more but still I started loosing my faith in the Church because I knew nothing about it. I even once shared my disbelieve which is something I still deeply regret.

After that few events in my life happened and I somehow slowly started returning to God (it was moreless a process). I was once again facing with the doubts and questions which were planted in my mind by the protestant. I decided to take to look at those claims. Through my research my faith in the Church returned and I now truly see the Truth.

So yes, in a way these claims send me fully back into the Church 🙂
Thanks in advance for your (name removed by moderator)ut and honesty!
No problem!

I accidentally stumbled upon another one, much to my grief because it is being perpetrated in the city in which I live:

APPENDIX C: Replacement Theology
An important aspect of the Latter Rain, and all of the Kingdom/Dominion type theologies (including Roman Catholicism), is they have decided that whenever the Bible says ‘‘Israel’’ it ‘‘really means’’ the church: they believe Israel has been permanantly set aside by God and its place has been given to the church, which has inherited every promise God made to Israel as a nation.
Another result of this unbiblical theology is anti-Semitism and persecution of the Jewish people. The Catholic church holds to replacement theology and many of the denominations that separated from it during the reformation failed to correct this error. We can see where this led in history.
I’ll email this off to the Catholic Civil Rights League.

What is the myth about the Jesuit Oath?
Oh, you’re gonna like that one. Supposedly every Jesuit swears this oath:

I do further promise and declare that I will, when opportunity presents, make and wage relentless war, secretly and openly, against all heretics, Protestants and Masons, as I am directed to do, to extirpate them from the face of the whole earth; and that I will spare neither age, sex nor condition, and that will hang, burn, waste, boil, flay, strangle, and bury alive these infamous heretics; rip up the stomachs and wombs of their women, and crush their infants’ heads against the walls in order to annihilate their execrable race. That when the same cannot be done openly I will secretly use the poisonous cup, the strangulation cord, the steel of the poniard, or the leaden bullet, regardless of the honour, rank, dignity or authority of the persons, whatever may be their condition in life, either public or private, as I at any time may be directed so to do by any agents of the Pope or Superior of the Brotherhood of the Holy Father of the Society of Jesus.
In confirmation of which I hereby dedicate my life, soul, and all corporal powers, and with the dagger which I now receive I will subscribe my name written in my blood in testimony thereof; and should I prove false, or weaken in my determination, may my brethren and fellow soldiers of the militia of the Pope cut off my hands and feet and my throat from ear to ear, my belly be opened and sulphur burned therein with all the punishment that can be inflicted upon me on earth, and my soul shall be tortured by demons in eternal hell forever. That I will in voting always vote for a Knight of Columbus in preference to a Protestant, especially a Mason, and that I will leave my party so to do; that if two Catholics are on the ticket I will satisfy myself which is the better supporter of Mother Church and vote accordingly. That I will not deal with or employ a Protestant if in my power to deal with or employ a Catholic. That I will place Catholic girls in Protestant families that a weekly report may be made of the inner movements of the heretics. That I will provide myself with arms and ammunition that I may be in readiness when the word is passed, or I am commanded to defend the Church either as an individual or with the militia of the Pope.

All of which I,_______________, do swear by the blessed Trinity and blessed sacrament which I am now to receive to perform and on part to keep this my oath.

In testimony hereof, I take this most holy and blessed sacrament of the Eucharist and witness the same further with my name written with the point of this dagger dipped in my own blood and seal in the face of this holy sacrament.

I mean, what kind of sick people think this stuff up?! Does anybody think the author(s) of this little ditty were born-again?

In doing some research on the fundamental differences between the Catholic religion and the Protestant faith…
Not really trying to hijack, but I for one would like a definition of the “Protestant faith”. Is there such a thing? So many differing views among the denominations. Your thread dealing with Baptism is one: many Protestant groups would disagree with you.
