Isn’t anyone else annoyed by the question “Are you Catholic or Christian?”

I’ve been asked this several times by both Protestants and shockingly Catholics. It’s been especially annoying when I tell them “Catholic is Christian” and they say “No! Christians sing and have bands and pastors” :doh2:

:dts: Anyone else encountered this problem or was asked this question?

I get very annoyed when people say “Catholics aren’t Christians”. Christians are the followers of Jesus of Nazareth, thus by definition Catholics are Christians. But it happens all the time on another forum I go to, people constantly come into the Christian groups and make threads going “are you Catholic or Christian” and I’m always reminding that Catholics are Christians.

I tend to cite my religion online as “Catholic Christian”. Though if someone asks my religion I do automatically respond “Catholic” because otherwise people assume Protestant if you say just “Christian”.

I usually am asked, “How long have you been a Christian?” to which I reply “all my life.” Then I’m asked which church I go to and I give them the name of the nearest Catholic Church.

Catholics are Christians, but not all Christians are Catholics and we should pray for them. :gopray: 🙂

This reminds me of when I was in 4th grade. My best friend asked what religion I was. I wasn’t sure how to respond since that was the first time I was asked.

I said “Catholic or Christian. I’m not sure which.”

Not 5 minutes later, someone else said something and my friend jumped right in with “Back off, man! He’s a Christian!”

I guess he knew. 😃

This has only happened to me online… never in person. Most people won’t attempt to tell me that Catholicism is a non-Christian religion in person. Those that do tell me that, usually are doing so from the safety of the internet.

Where I work there is a club for “Bible-based Christians”.

I sent them an email asking what “Bible-based Christian” means, but never got a reply. I guess if you have to ask…

I’ve never heard the “Catholic or Christian” dichotomy directly from a Catholic, but I have heard Catholics talk, sometimes disparagingly, about “Christians”, meaning Protestants, or say some charismatic music or something sounds too “Christian” to them, things like that.

It’s very strange. If you ask for clarification they’ll quickly correct themselves and say that “yes, of course we Catholics are Christians too, but… well… you know what I meant.” 🤷

I think sometimes it’s just a quirk of language that began in Protestantism but sometimes bleeds into how Catholics speak too, without any ideological intention in the case of Catholics of course, and sometimes I think without an ideological intention for some modern Protestants as well. It’s just the way they speak, picked up from others around them.

I have wondered that myself too.

God bless.

On another forum, I saw this one girl mention that she was Catholic. A week or so later, on another thread, she said “I like Christian music even though I’m not Christian.” I didn’t say anything since we’re technically not supposed to talk about religion there, but wow.

We are Christians…have been since the first century.

First members of the Church were called “the disciples”…

Later called followers of “the way” …and it seems “Nazarenes”

then at Antioch we started being called Christians.

Later in the first century the Church started to be called “Catholic” (see St. Ignatius --again at Antioch --use around the year 100)

So in time Christians began to be also called Catholics.

And as various heresies arose in the first centuries…which claimed to be Christian …the word was used to differentiate Christians from the others was Catholic…

Of course we still called ourselves Christians…but also we used the term Catholic.

Now a days we have many sorts of Christians --who are indeed Christians and our brothers…though we are unhappily not yet in full communion.

Catholics are Christians who in full communion with the successor of Peter. We call ourselves Christians all the time…Pope Benedict XVI when addressing the faithful does not usually say “Catholics this or that” but he calls them Christians…for that is what we are.

Other Christians have various degrees of communion with us (not speaking here of Holy Communion …but of “being in communion with”).

Are Catholics Christians??? Yes most certainly! (see my description of myself in the upper right corner)

As one early Christian noted (375AD)

“If you want to know who I am,” he said, “Christian is my name, Catholic is my surname.” --St. Pacian

Something similar happened my friends and I were talking about the whole May 21, 2011 “rapture” theory and about how those who believe in the rapture say that the Christians will be snatched up to Heaven and everyone else will be left behind.

Another guy said “well I guess I’m getting Left Behind because I’m not a Christian” and we asked what he was and he said “I’m Catholic” :doh2: :dts:

I once liked something on Facebook that said “I’m so proud to be a Christian” or something like that, and a friend wrote to me, “You’re not Christian, you’re Catholic”, to which I responded, “I’m a Catholic Christian.” He probably thought it was a combination between Catholic and Protestant. 😃

But of course we have to understand that some of our brothers are misinformed…so we simply need to disabuse them of the misunderstanding…of course in a “Christian way” hee hee

My favorite reply to this is
“I’m Catholic, we’re the original Christians!”😛

Most people don’t know what to say!

Yeah :yup: But unfortunately the kids at my school think “Christian” means “Protestant” :sad_yes:

I have heard Catholics who left the Church say, “I used to be Catholic, but now I’m a Christian.” Something has been lost in catechesis.
