My question is do Catholics believe we are saved because we are covered by the blood of Jesus so even we are saved and live a homosexual lifestyle/have addictions/ or just sin are we still saved?
Catholics believe we are saved by receiving the saving grace merited for us by Jesus’ passion and death on the cross. We receive this grace through faith and the sacrament of Baptism (“washing of regeneration”).
Romans 3:24 they are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus,
Eph. 2:5&8 even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)…
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is a gift of God.
Titus 3:4-7 …He saved us, …by the washing of regeneration and renewal in the Holy Spirit, which He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that we might be justified by His grace and become heirs in hope of eternal life.
We can lose this supernatural life of saving grace through willed, grave sin. If we die in that state without repenting and seeking forgiveness, we will not be saved.
My Christian friend said we are and there is no where in the bible that says we are not saved except the only mortal sin is blasphemy of the Holy spirit and denying Jesus Christ as Lord.
Show your friend these passages.
(Keep in mind that Paul is speaking to baptized, believing Christians in these passages.)
1 Cor 6:9-10 … Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, Nor idolators, nor adulterers, nor sexual perverts, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God.
Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are plain; immorality, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry,m sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger, selfishness, dissension, party spirit, envy, drunkeness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Ephesians 5:5 Be sure of this, that no immoral or impure man, or one who is covetous (that is, an idolator) has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for it is because of these things that the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience.
2 Thess 1:7-10 …when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance upon those who do not know God and upon those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They shall suffer the punishment of eternal destruction and exclusion from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might, 1:10 when he comes on that day to be glorified in his saints, …
So we are catholics so hung up on Sin? Do they study the bible? Do they celebrate Jesus dying on the cross and our gift of Grace? What is mortal sin? thanks
Not sure what you mean by “hung up on Sin”. We’re aware of how displeasing it is to God and how we can risk our salvation by deliberately living in serious sin and refusing to repent and try to change. I call that being wise, not “hung up”.
The word “mortal” means fatal, causing death, deadly, etc.
Mortal sin is sin that causes us to lose the supernatural life of grace (saving/justifying/sanctifying grace) that we received in Baptism. When that grace from God is not present in our soul, our soul is “dead” in sin.
Catholicism teaches that things are require in order for a sin to be mortal.
Here are some paragraphs from the Catechism of the Catholic Church regarding mortal sin.
1857 For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must together be met: "Mortal sin is sin whose object is** grave matter** and which is also committed with** full knowledge** and** deliberate consent**."131
1858 Grave matter is specified by the Ten Commandments, corresponding to the answer of Jesus to the rich young man: "Do not kill, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and your mother."132 The gravity of sins is more or less great: murder is graver than theft. One must also take into account who is wronged: violence against parents is in itself graver than violence against a stranger.
1859 Mortal sin requires full knowledge and complete consent. It presupposes knowledge of the sinful character of the act, of its opposition to God’s law. It also implies a consent sufficiently deliberate to be a personal choice. Feigned ignorance and hardness of heart133 do not diminish, but rather increase, the voluntary character of a sin.
