The Holy Synod.

In anticipation of your next question, the Holy Synod also decides who is a member of said Synod (always bishops).

The selection of Primate varies from Church to Church.

You mean, if he’s looking for a mirror of his own church? From my experience I would have to say, probably not. That’s more something I find among the Anglicans.

How many Bishops are in a synod?

What if a bigger number of non-synod Bishops (those under synods) get together and say “we are a synod and outpowering you?”

Will the synod still be above their gavering which is attempting to be a synod?

If so on what bases?

They vary in size, it is completely up to the Synod in Question. They can grow over time. For some reason it sticks in my head that the Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate is 11 bishops, while in the OCA every active bishop is a member of the Holy Synod.

A rival group of bishops getting together and declaring themselves a Synod has happened, the example I gave earlier of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (KIevan Patriarchate) was born from such action. Because the new Synod is not recognized by anyone else they effectively excommunicate themselves by such an action. It is an act of schism.

And I think this thread is a testament to the problem of western Catholics who won’t even attempt to understand Orthodoxy on its own terms, insisting that everything be discussed on Catholic, western terms.

It’s an assessment of the thread and those posting, although if you noticed I’ve used quite a few Orthodox sources. 😉

So other synods have to recognise that synod in order for it to not be in schism and not excommunicated? That doesn’t make sense if all synods are equal. If all synods are equal other synods can’t logically say “yours is not a valid synod” it would seem.

Unless there was a supreme synod which could say “your synod is not valid” that this doesn’t seem to make sense

The Catholic Church has one western rite and 22 eastern rites. 23 that makes all together. Having the Pope as unity is not just Western.

A group of usurpers can’t just circumvent the rules and declare themselves to be a new synod. There’s nothing illogical about all the legitimate synods rejecting such a group.

That’s not even what I was talking about. BTW, there are not 22 Eastern Catholic rites, there are 22 Eastern Catholic sui iurus churches.
