Hi everyone,

My name is Antonio and I’m from Melbourne, Australia. I just wanted to ask a few questions and figured this is the best place to do it.

So my wife and I were fortunate enough to have a baby girl. God bless her. Now we need to baptise her but I’m Catholic and my wife is Orthodox. Obviously we both one or the other, but I was curious about a few things.

If a child is baptised Orthodox is he/she allowed to take Holy Communion in a Catholic Church?

If a child is baptised Orthodox/Catholic can he/she get a blessing from the other church? I know you can only get baptised one religion but can a blessing or something be done?

Last but not least if a child is baptised Orthodox. If they attend a Catholic school can they still do reconciliation, communion, confirmation etc etc

Thanks heaps guys. Antonio

I encourage you to talk to the pastors at both churches for guidance as you move forward.

My understanding is that you can but if Baptized Catholic you can’t in the Orthodox receive.

May I ask

When you were married, did you get married in the Catholic Church?

If so,

did the priest tell you in advance, children were to be raised Catholic and that had to be an agreement made, before the marriage could take place in the Church?

Catholics and Orthodox should receive the sacraments only in their respective churches, per the current norms. There are some exceptions made in the canons.

Mixed marriages require a promise to be made by the Catholic spouse (See Can. 1125 below.)

Catechism
  • 1633 In many countries the situation of a mixed marriage (marriage between a Catholic and a baptized non-Catholic) often arises. It requires particular attention on the part of couples and their pastors. A case of marriage with disparity of cult (between a Catholic and a nonbaptized person) requires even greater circumspection.
Latin Catholic Canon Law
  • Can. 1124 Without express permission of the competent authority, a marriage is prohibited between two baptized persons of whom one is baptized in the Catholic Church or received into it after baptism and the other of whom is enrolled in a Church or ecclesial community not in full communion with the Catholic Church.
  • Can. 1125 The local ordinary can grant a permission of this kind if there is a just and reasonable cause. He is not to grant it unless the following conditions have been fulfilled:
    • 1/ the Catholic party is to declare that he or she is prepared to remove dangers of defecting from the faith and is to make a sincere promise to do all in his or her power so that all offspring are baptized and brought up in the Catholic Church;

We were married by a celebrant not in a church. But prior to our wedding day we took a blessing in a Orthodox Church to be recognised as married under a church. Does that make sense?

Antonio

No, it doesn’t make sense. Not for the Orthodox or Catholic Church.

You and your spouse need to sit down with both your Catholic pastor and your Orthodox pastor and straighten this out. You need to determine the current state of your marriage in both churches, and if necessary you may need to be married in the Orthodox Church to make sure your marriage is valid in both churches.

Next you will need to deal with the sacraments for your future children. This is not something anonymous strangers on the internet can help you with. This is something you need to talk to your pastor and the Orthodox pastor about in great detail.

See this document:

The non-Catholic party makes no agreement.

And, it doesn’t appear that the Catholic went through any channels in the Church regarding marriage. If they were married in the Orthodox Church then the marriage is valid in the Catholic Church whether they got permission for mixed marriage or not.

Yes. Were there any prior marriages for either?

The predicate was, Had they been married in a Catholic Church,

Then the Catholic party in a mixed marriage, has an obligation to try and raise the Children Catholic.

that said, there’s Not much chance of that happening if the Catholic party is not practicing their faith.

The old format would allow me to delete or change a post after it was posted within 10 minutes. Yet another difficulty of this new format.
On your post, select the pencil.
Thanks 🤟

When you married an Orthodox, did you give promises to the Catholic church to raise the children Catholic? I think that is typically what is asked in mixed marriages…

if the child is baptized Orthodox, no they won’t be able to receive Communion in a Catholic Church or receive any of the other Sacraments through Catholic school.

No first marriage for both.
That is good, for it was not an impediment. Really for the Orthodox, there has to be the blessing. There should be some official record of it then.
