During the course of their election campaigns, I have seen political figures ostentatiously attend Mass and identify themselves as Catholic in the attempt to garner votes. However, their positions on abortion, marriage, and homosexuality are contrary to the Church’s teaching. Why are they allowed to receive Communion? Should they be excommunicated?

Pax tecum!

They excommunicate themselves by their actions if they are doing something like supporting abortion, gay marriage, embryonic stem cell research, assisted suicide, ect. They should be denied Communion at every church, but sadly, most are not. Archbishop Burke, Bishop Vasa, and, I believe, Cardinal O’Malley have publically stated that those politicians have excommunicated themselves and will not be given Communion in their diocese. On the radio, Fr. Corapi said, in regards to pro-abortion politicians, “Would I deny them at the Communion rail? I just hope I wouldn’t recognize them!” This was after he said that being pro-abortion was heresy (which is something that Bishop Vasa wrote in ‘The Catholic Sentinal’ here in Oregon).

In Christ,
Rand
