It seems like the media sends mixed messages about Catholics. Sometimes the Catholic is an uptight religious fanatic who is out of touch with others, or they’re abusive. And other times they’re heroic clergy casting out evil spirits from people with an aray of Latin prayers and holy water, and dispensing spiritual wisdom.

Can you expound a little further?

In the first part, you are describing the “media”, ie: the news stations and newspapers.

In the second part, you are describing both facets of Hollywood depictions of Catholicism.

Yup…they hate us. That’s what it comes down to. That’s the litmus test…we know that we are the one true Church.

By media, I mean every media outlet. Movies, tv, the press.

They can’t hate Catholics all the time. They are portrayed as heros in exorcism themed shows as well.

Yeah, it’s always open season on us Catholics…until a vampire or a demon shows up and then everyone is running for Rosays, a Crucifix and Holy Water. Notice how a protestant minister is never called in these “cases”, and if he is, (in certain books) he’s also running to get the aforementioned items? LOL!

I heard that in the actual exorcism case that the film ‘the exorcist’ was based on occured to a Lutheran boy. The Lutheran pastor told the boy’s parents to seek out a Catholic priest to help him, since he didn’t know how.

this discussion would have a point if posters cited specific examples, as a rant without basis, well what is there to discuss?

I’m talking about general portrayals. I noticed both good and bad portrayals of Catholics in the media, and wanted to know what you all think. I cited a few examples of how they are portrayed in the media.
