From what I understand, the Catholic Church does not hold to Soul Sleep. Are there any books that you would tell me of on the reson for this posture?

I don’t think you need a whole book - very simply Christ said that God is a God of the living, not the dead - and that Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were living. Along with a whole lot of others - the just who were seen walking around after the Crucifixion for example.

Obviously the bodies of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob were dead, so in what sense were they living? Clearly the soul stays alive. Not ‘sleeping’, as Moses and Elijah showed when they spoke with Christ at his Transfiguration, but ALIVE and active.

The mount of Transfiguration with Moses and Elijah speaking with Jesus would deny the teaching. Likewise, the entirety of the heavenly scene in the book of Revelation would also deny it.

Soul sleep is a concept that did not exist until the advent of Ellen White whos work is circa 1915. If it wasn’t taught by the early Church, who received the faith directly from the Apostles, it is difficult to give it any credibility.

One could say that they were exception, how many people get brought body and soul into heaven.

Would you please expond on the later statement?

Toten,

Abraham
Isaac
Jacob
Moses
The Souls under the altar in Revelation
The Great Cloud of Witnesses in Hebrews

All of these refute soul sleep… they are not exceptions and do not necessarily have their bodies in heaven. Remember, Christ said that there are those (man) who cannot kill the soul, but only the body. This leads us to a dualistic view of mankind. In addition, as has already been pointed out when referring to the three patriarchs, Christ makes it clear that he is their God, and that God is the God of the living not the dead.

Finally, we find in 1 Thess 4 that Christ will BRING with him those who have died in faith, when he returns to earth. How can he bring with him (from heaven), those who died in the faith, if they are not with him, as soul sleep claims?

1Th 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also that are fallen asleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

One last point… Christ was fully man… if one believes in Soul Sleep, then that one must believe that Christ who was fully man, ceased to exist in the grave. Thus God ceased to exist as the Trinity. It is self refuting. It was Christ’s body which died, not his spirit.

Was there anything to prove that Moses and Elijah were there physically, too?

Isn’t it possible they were visible as spirits, like angels can even be seen, but didn’t have a body?

Moses… no In fact scripture states that he died and God buried him…

However, Elijah was taken bodily into heaven according to scripture, Enoch is usually considered to have been taken bodily into heave also.
