I have had two priests give me two different answers to the question “Is it ok to shout in church like some protestant do?” In my opinon I think its alright but at some parts of the mass it shouldnt be. You see praise breaks in some black catholic churches. Now I believe that Jesus is the center of the mass and our objective is to worship him in the mass however, shouting and praise break is how we worship him, we “praise him through the dance.” I do not believe this is an abuse in the church. I believe the bishop has no problems with it. I also asked a Trindentine Latin Mass Priest his opinion and he said it does not happen at his church but it may happen at churches with a black congregation. I made this thread to see others opinions on this. What do you think? Should people worship God this way? Thank You. 🙂

I think respect and reverence is always expected as it should

As the other poster said, respect and reverence is always necessary. Shouting is distracting to others, and interrupts the prayers of the priest. It should never be done.

For me it’s not Mass appropriate. I always equate anything that happens at Mass to: Would I have done this at the foot of the cross?

At the Mass we are participating in the sacrifice of our Lord. Why would we be shouting or dancing at the foot of His cross?

Outside of Mass I do these things (shout praise, dance, etc) but within Mass it just doesn’t fit.

I feel that there should be no shouting during the Mass. While in Church, we should be respectful. It is one thing to sing, to respond to the priest ("and with your spirit," for example), and say prayers together (such as the Lord’s Prayer), and responses that are part of the Mass, etc…

However yelling something that is not part of the Mass I feel isn’t very appropriate. It’s not part of the liturgy and this could distract people around you. It’s not as bad as when let’s say someones cell phone starts ringing during Mass, but you get my idea:)

Outside of Mass? Certainly, if that is how you feel closer to God. At Mass, where were are brought to the foot of the cross as our Lord is being sacrificed? No, I don’t think it is appropriate.

Mass is a celebration of the gift Jesus Christ gave to the world when He promised that He would be with us always. It is a retracing the steps He took to His crucifixion, and ultimately, it is us being present as He gave His life in atonement for OUR sins. We are literally there with Him. Why would we be whooping it up at such a sacrifice. It begs reverence and respect. It is not merely a “worship service” or a “prayer meeting”.

I don’t why the churches that have the great treasure of the liturgy that have some people seem to think that Baptist and Pentecostals do it better with mindless praise songs and bands or contemporary worship.

Well if the priest is shouting and the congregation is too, who is distracted? 🤷 It doesnt happen at any time. Its usually permissible near the end of mass or after the sermon or whatever times the spirit moves.

Because not everybody has the same culture. One of the main reasons why you dont see many african americans in the Catholic Church today is because the liturgy does not adapt to their culture. The Church I will soon be attending adapts to African American Culture and the church is the largest african american Church in Baltimore and still growing.

So since we must look at the mass as if we were at the foot of the Cross we should be sad? When we walk in the doors of the church for mass should we have frowns on our faces and should we cry tears of sorrow? Though this may happen, when you think of Jesus and what he did for us on calvery, doesnt that make you want to shout for joy? Halleliujah, my savior died for me, let me rejoice for he has saved me from my sins. He has opened the doors of Heaven to me and by his grace may I be permitted in. Oh how much joy we should have at the foot of the cross, and how we should shout for joy.

“But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ; by whom the world is crucified to me, and I to the world. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision, but a new creature.”
-Galatians 6:14-15 😃

I think there is a bit of mis-representation here.

We (southern baptists) do not shout or distract from communion, prayers, etc. But if someone is speaking on issues, such as abortion, or something of that nature, why would you not encourage them?

Why should we be whooping it up at such a sacrifice? BECAUSE OF WHAT THE SACRIFICE WAS FOR !!! YOU AND ME !

Reverence-Deep respect for
We give total respect ot Jesus on the Cross. We GLORY in the cross like ST.Paul oh how great is our God. I thank You Lord for having sent down your only son to come down and die for me. Oh I thank You Jesus for accepting the will of your Father and having come down from your mighty and glorios throne to come in our form and die and painful and gruesome death for ME ! OH Thank You Jesus !!!

Respect-A feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements
Oh how we get a feeling of deep admiration for God when we praise him through the dance. 😃

Glory in the Cross

At my soon to be church no one is ever distracted and the priest actually hypes up the people to praise God this way. No one is ever distracted but I understand in some churches that do not express thereselves this way like in th Trindentine Latin Mass.🙂

We would be shouting because he died for US !👍

That’s just not how I see it. I suppose because I’ve had the joy and praise bit down for many, many years I’m experiencing my reverence and quiet time now.

I AM sad at the Mass. It absolutely torments me that He HAD to suffer for ME. That won’t ever cause me to jump up and down for joy. EVER. When I look at the crucifix and think about how much he suffered I feel nothing but sorrow… I don’t think about what it’s done for ME, I think about what it did to HIM…

Perhaps I’ll get to the point where I don’t look at the crucifix and feel sorrow but it’s not yet. 🤷

But by the same token, Lutheran Churches in Africa that are in fellowship with the LC-MS use basically the same liturgy and love it. We have a family from Nigeria that worship with us and they felt right at home.

I am not refering to “southern” baptists.

Of course some will like it. I LOVE the Tridentine Latin Mass but Black Catholic Masses, I LOVE too.👍

Its not good to be sad ALL THE TIME be happy that your Lord is NOT dead but has risen and has come to the earth to die FOR YOU! You should feel SPECIAL. 🙂
I used to and still cry when I see the crucifix sometimes but after I finish meditating and get to the part when I get to the tomb and after what happened 3 days later. GLORY TO GOD !! IM HAPPY ! 😃
