You start attending at age 18 correct? Do you need to go to college first, or can you go right away to a seminary? I heard you can, but others say you cannot. What grades do you think you need to obtain in High school? For reference I am 15 years old.

😃 Our Priest from Africa mentioned that he joined the seminary at 14. High school/seminaries were also used in other times/places, and I think there may be one or two left in the US.

One of my friends is going to Seminary. It’s a post-baccalaureate degree.

So he is going to seminary as an equivalent of going to grad school.

However, there are minor seminaries out there, where you would start at 18.

God bless you in your discernment 😃

There are two options.

You can go to University(preferably Catholic) get a degree in Philosophy, with a minor in Theology. Then you would go into Major Seminary. If you went to a Catholic Seminary with suitable formation, it would be 5 more years before being Ordained. If you went to a regular University, you would need more Philosophy and Formation, and it could be more like 7 years in Major Seminary

Second option is you can go straight to Minor Seminary. The difference here is it will be all male, all considering Priesthood. It really doesnt make the time any shorter, still 9 years start to finish, but it would give you a better idea of Seminary.

The choice pretty much boils down to what kind of experience you want after high school. I personally am choosing to go to Franciscan University of Steubenville(shameless plug) becuase they have an awesome Pre-Theologate program that will ready me for Seminary, while I will still get to interact with a larger group of people.

This sort of question should perhaps be posted in the “Vocations” section of the forums. Though I don’t know if you’d get more replies there.

Have you spoken to the office for vocations in your diocese? They will answer all your questions.

I went to college first, took some philosophy courses, those who do not have a philosophy background usually have 2 years of Pre-Theology and then after that enter into the Theologate.

You can attend minor seminary, where you live in a seminary environment, but take most of you classes at a Catholic University, or you can attend College w/o being in a Seminary program.

In either case, after college you would go to Major Seminary.

You can take either approach, depending on what you want. I would think the Minor Seminary approach might be more supportive of your vocation. You’d be among other with a similiar focus.

God Bless you in your vocation!
