I am on a committee that has both a Mayor and a Cardinal on the Advisory Council. We are unsure which to list first on our letterhead. One solution might be to list them all alphabetically, but we don’t want to upset the Cardinal or the Mayor. Is there some Catholic protocol that might answer this question?

If it’s a church committee the Cardinal would go first. Otherwise probably alphabetical is the right way to go. Most boards and committees I’ve been on list members alphabetically (except the Chair gets listed first).

(It’s tough to put equivalencies between secular and clerical offices but Cardinals are called the “princes” of the church so they would probably outrank mayors.)

Incidentally, the proper way to list the Cardinal’s name is:
First Name Cardinal Last Name. (That is, the title goes in the middle)
