Hello all,

           I have a few questions about Catholicism that have been chewing me up for a while now. What makes a 'good' Catholic? I'm young and just started to get back into Catholicism after having never practiced it during my childhood. I try to read the bible as much as I can, but I do not read it everyday yet, and I can't make it to church yet, so I can't go to confessional or even talk to a priest, and I forget to pray everyday.

I already assume this makes me ‘less’ Catholic then people that attend church everyday, etc, but does it mean that maybe God pays less attention to me then others?

Praise God for you. Faith comes, it comes by hearing the Word of God. God loves you like a son. be not afraid, you are in the right track. back into the Church that Jesus Himself built. what wonderfull gift. watch EWTN the Catholic chanel. you will learn a lot. there is Mass everyday at 12:00 pm and 7:00 pm. also coming home show every monday at 8:00 pm.

People will have a lot of ideas about what makes a good Catholic. For me, it starts with a relationship with Jesus. There are various ways of deepening that relationship. One that comes to mind is the one you’re already using – reading about him and getting to know him through scripture. Perhaps you could spend some time each day reading the gospel reading for the day and thinking about what that teaches you about Jesus. The daily readings are available online at usccb.org/nab/

Another way of deepening your relationship with him is through prayer. There are so many forms of prayer available that it’s largely a question of finding your particular prayer style. Perhaps you would want to spend a few minutes before you go to bed doing what the Jesuits call the Examen. It’s a way of looking over your day in a prayerful way. I’d suggest starting small – perhaps just a few minutes in the morning and a few minutes in the evening – but being faithful to whatever practices you adopt. It’s better to spend 5 minutes praying every morning than to have great intentions of spending hours in prayer and then not doing it at all. And then see where the spirit leads you.

The definition of a “good Catholic” varies in everyone’s opinion. Only God knows. but you’re on your way. Go to mass receieve the Eucharist often, go to confession, read your bible, pray, and so forth. You’ll eventually become a “good Catholic”. It doesn’t happen over night. And believe me,many us so called “good Catholics” really aren’t!
