Catholic rationalism and legalism

It’s often said that Catholicism leans heavily to rationalism, whereas Orthodox Christianity is less so and more mystical. It’s also said that Catholicism leans much more to legalistic approaches to sin, salvation…etc than Orthodox Christianity. Perhaps this is because rationalism involves much more thinking than mysticism.

Do you have experiences with BOTH Catholicism and Orthodox Christianity? What are your experiences of these differences mentioned?
 
@Spyridon might know something about that, but I have been seeing him around lately.
