My wife is a Catholic from The Philippines. I was raised Protestant but have not attended any church in decades. My wife encouraged me to attend a Catholic service: lots of confusion on my part and I have not yet gone as far as speaking to a priest. If you had to recommend 2-3 books regarding the basics of Catholicism - a primer - what would they be? Please do not say Catholicism for Dummies; read that years ago and here I still am. thanks!!

And wish I’d thought of that. It has basically everything. Thanks!!

Catholicism…For Dummies

It’s a good, basic overview.

Waking Up Catholic by Tad Torgerson. Reasonably slim volume…excellent read. 😊

Thank you. Will look into that one.

Read parts of it several years ago but will either dig it out or find another copy. Thanks!

Thanks again for the reference. Just purchased your suggestion via Amazon.

Trent Horn’s Why We’re Catholic will help you understand the faith. Just attending Mass with your wife and soaking it in will help you in due time adjust to the “mechanics” of Catholic worship.

The Catholic catechism, Why I’m Catholic and What Catholics Really Believe.

I’m Byzantine Catholic but here are some great Roman Catholic resources:
  1. The Lambs Supper Byzantine by Dr. Scott Hahn
  2. Hail, Holy Queen by Dr. Scott Hahn
  3. Rome Sweet Home by Dr. Scott Hahn
ZP

The Case for Catholicism by Trent Horn is excellent for understanding the differences between Catholicism and Protestantism and why.

I leave it to others to recommend books on basic Catholic rules and the Mass.

Thank you for the suggestion. Have already received a book: Waking Up Catholic by Chad Torgerson which was also recommended. Yours will be next!

Just noticed your suggestion is the second reply referencing a Tent Horn work. His Why We’re Catholic is the other. Thanks again.

My advice: Stop reading! That can be a reason both to accept or reject ideas. You are static. Become dynamic.

GO! Go before Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. Yes, it takes faith to look upon the accidents of bread and see Christ. How many are truly in the presence of Christ and see only bread?

Go. Sit. Pray. OK, read if you have something edifying. Tell Him about your doubts and struggles. Strive to be as patient with Him as He has been with you. Then, as Fr. Benedict Groeschel† C.F.R. taught:
“You can spend your life looking forward to it, or looking back on it. But when you are aware that He is there, you will be changed.”

Quite a different approach than the reading suggestions - quite a few - I have received but when it’s all boiled down, yours is, in practicality, the best I have received. Thank you very much!!
