Is it true that CRS has provided contraception and abortifacients? If so, has this been addressed and resolved, or is it an ongoing issue?

I’ve only read it on Lifesite. I’ll get flayed for saying this, but I always cross-reference everything I read on Lifesite. So far I haven’t found a corroborating story.

Which is a good idea. I haven’t heard anything about it either, except from the same sources that you and @StudentMI have cited.

Been to long since ive seen it to remember which sites but im sure ive seen it on other sites since i dont visit church militant or lifesite.

I’m sure it happened, because if it didn’t, the groups that reported it would have been sued.

However, what I’m not sure of is whether it was done on purpose or not by the organization. It could have been a rogue employee or an oversite when selecting vendors.

What happens is that a there is an event, let’s say a devastating tornado or earthquake, a famine or a war. CRS, Catholic Charities come in and help those in need.

They do not give a “doctrine test” to the clinic or shelter or other NGO ticks all the Catholic boxes, they simply help people. Even sinner people, even non-Christian people.

Outrage bait researchers dig through the records of these charities to find the GOTCHA that will make a good headline = clicks = $$.

How does that in any way justify a Catholic organization giving contraception and abortifacients? I am sorry but how are the laity supposed to take the teachings of the faith seriously when catholic institutions are endorsing/helping people sin. That is of course if this is a true story. I’m still curious how those actions could be justifiable.

“Sorry you lost your homes, sorry your village is starving, we cannot give you any food because you do not abide by Catholic doctrine.”

ETA. The linked reports, read the first one and the only thing that came to mind was “straining at gnats”.

The report quotes a report that says people get HIV and one reason they get HIV is because they were not using condoms. This is a scientific fact. Stating a fact does not mean they are handing out free condoms at the CRS tent!

Thanks for the research! It’s infuriating this is able to take place. Maybe I am young and naive but how are bishops not coming down on these organizations like a hammer on a nail. No wonder the Catholic faithful are so confused on contraception when Catholic institutions are promoting it.

I never said we don’t give them food if they are not Catholic. I am saying what justification is there for a Catholic institution to support and provide contraception and abortifacients? It is absolutely unacceptable. People donate money expecting it to go towards an organization that will help in a moral and good way and they are blatantly doing it in an immoral way.

Where is your proof that a CRS is providing contraception?

This link provided by @MHichborn seems to be good evidence. Even if they did not what exactly would justify them doing so was my original question.

This was my original question. Assuming the story is true, which now seems like it is given the evidence linked above, what justification is there for this group providing evil services?

There is no justification.

That’s what I believe as well.

@TheLittleLady said the following in response to the story:

I was pondering to her the question, that say the story is true. Just because we don’t give a doctrine test for aid (which we shouldn’t), how would it justify the actions of CRS if true. She never gave me a clear answer. Maybe I wasn’t clear with my original question.

There are many other possibilities.
According to wikipedia, it happened back in 2011. A Freedom of Information Act request was submitted and documents were obtained. CRS participated for 2.75 years using the program called “Shuga,” which was produced by MTV, the UN, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, etc.

Apparently, CRS approved the program’s use PROVIDED that it was an “Abstinence and Be Faithful” program.

After CRS removed the Shuga program because it contained several totally immoral positions (due to MTVs influence, I’m sure) - after approx 3000 teens already reviewed it through CRS - CRS made the following statement (within a larger statement):
While CRS strictly adheres to the teachings of the Catholic Church, and our main partners are local parishes and dioceses throughout the world, we work with other agencies who are not always aligned with Catholic teaching.

The entire FOIA set of documents can be found in the following 664 page PDF file, hosted on the internet by the Lepanto Institute: http://www.lepantoinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/FOIA-documents_full.pdf

Point is: it happened. In my view, this was most likely a rogue group of employees acting, and not the Bishops. Now, I have no idea what the lay leadership knew, but my belief is that the Bishops did NOT know this was happening until videos were removed.

Also, it’s important to know that while CRS was founded by the USCCB, it is independent, with a newer board of directors since the Shuga fiasco.

Finally, if you want to see what the Shuga program was, you can use this link. The first 3 episodes are at the bottom of the page: http://www.lepantoinstitute.org/crs-implemented-condom-promoting-video-series/

Point is, it happened, almost 10 years ago, but I’m sure it wasn’t something the bishops approved of.

God Bless

Thanks for pointing out the context. While not acceptable, I am glad they at lease took responsibility for it. If anything, we the laity and especially the bishops, need to be watching this very closely. Stuff like this is a great way to confuse and scandalize the faithful on what is and isn’t acceptable.
