Catholic Relief Services new catalog

Has anyone else seen the new catalog sent out by CRS Fair Trade? It’s a beautiful catalog and a wonderful cause. It has a hugh flaw though-they are selling a wall hanging of “ganesh the hindu elephant deity”??? Thier website is www.crsfairtrade.org . :mad:
 
I sent the Catholic relief services a email asking why they are selling a mask of a false god and they replied, it’s art. I find this so offensive and wonder if anyone else does?

I do, even though I haven’t seen the catalog in question. I was hoping for a better answer from them, too 😦
 
It actually was a better answer, long and involved. They said what good they do and how this piece helps people to feed themselves. They sent a long explaining e-mail that I read as"it’s art."
I totally agree they do a great work, but there is no excuse for selling idols. They also sell a budda, which I saw first and was mildly shocked, then I saw the elephant “god” and was astonished , saddened and angry.
 
I am a regular contributor to CRS, but I just sent them an email telling them that if they do not remove these items from availability, I will stop donating to them altogether.
Maybe they will get the message.

Thank you for the support Jaypeeto4 , I hope more people will let them know. You know, it’s insidious, these things creep into the culture and we all just turn a blind eye. It makes me think of the Israelites, living with the Egyptians making false idols, and getting smote by God.
 
What about the Buddha Mask that they are selling?
I for one actually found both of the masks to be beautiful pieces of “ART”.
Also isnt CRS Fair Trade partnered with SERRV International, perhaps this is where they are getting their non-catholic things from?!?!
 
I’m sorry, I take idol worship very seriously. I find absolutely no value in this elephant. Do you really realize what it is? It’s one of the many false gods hindus worship. I can value the fact that there is some truth in every monothestic religion. This isn’t anything to stand back and say" oh what a nice piece of art" about. ITS A FALSE god!!! I find it abhorrant, along with the many bizarre and discusting practices some hindus follow.
I’m not saying hindus are bad people, because we are all made in Gods image. But this is one line that needs to be drawn. To heck with the namby pamby PC that says art can be anything. Such thinking is what brings the supposed art that deplicts Mary in cow dung.😦
CRS Fair Trade may be partnered with non catholics, that doesn’t mean much to me. They represent themselves as a Catholic entity and are supported by the bishops of our church, there should be no question of selling such items. I hope I don’t sound ungracious, I appreciate your open mindedness, but can not say I share in it.

This idol stuff is all new since the last fews times I looked…this is not cool…in fact this is very sad to see.
Thanks for bringing it to our attention.
I hope and pray CRS makes some changes.

Than perhaps CRS should not partner with non catholic groups…it would seem that would solve the issue!!!
As to the elephant mask and the budha mask…I see them as art not as false gods since I do not follw those religions.
 
I still see them as false gods. If statues of baal were on sale, I’d be offended too. Guess I’m too in love with God to see it any other way. I don’t mean to imply that you are not in love with God, just that I can see you don’t have the same feelings about this particular subject.

Guess not…that is have the same feeling regarding this as you.
Once again I suggest that you contact them and request that they stop partnering up with non-catholic groups than this wont be an issue any longer!
 
I don’t think they value my opinion all that much. I was thinking of sending an email to the bishops site. I’m keeping it in prayer right now as to what more I should do.

That is a shame (that they dont value your opinion)…I hope you fins a resolution to this though !
