Casting Crowns is Southern Baptist. When their debut CD was released, the SBC officially endorsed them and publicized the fact that all the band members are faithful Southern Baptists. Lifeway (Southern Baptist bookstore chain) promoted them heavily.Casting Crowns is Catholic?
I never thought of that. That’s a good point. Casting Crowns has performed at Liberty University and has also done a nationwide tour where most of their performances were in Baptist churches. And yes, calling yourself “Katholicus” does definitely make your position clear.Well, they are not listed on the Catholic Jukebox website, which lists every known (or at least published) Catholic band. I suspected they were not Catholic by the name. To me, the name “Casting Crowns” has an anti-monarchical meaning, implying a denial of the social Kingship of Christ, or that the Kingdom of Heaven is not to find expression on earth. Yet don’t we all prayer the “Our Father” saying Thy KINGDOM come, Thy will be done ON earth as it is in Heaven"? So we are to do on earth as is done in heaven, and heaven is a Kingdom. On the other hand, a name like Katholicus announces their position pretty clearly.
Switchfoot is quite possibly *the *greatest band I have ever heard in the past 20 years.Friday Mourning is a Catholic band.
Hawk Nelson, MxPx, Relient K, and Switchfoot aren’t Catholic bands, but they’re really good Christian bands.![]()

LOL I wish I had that talent. But I do confess, I know the girl who sings the title track and a few other parts on their CD. She goes to my highschool. Get the CD, it rocks with uncompromising lyrics. The sound is like 80s rock guitar sound.
Thanks. I love the 80s guitar rock sound, and now I’m interested in hearing the lyrics. I think I’ll have to look for this one.
Thanks. I checked out the website and listened to some samples. Good stuff. I think I’ll be ordering soon.Sure! You can go to their website at www.katholicus.com to order. They also have a lyrics link. The web site isn’t the greatest, but the message gets across.
Switchfoot is Protestant, from the Calvary Chapel movement it seems. You can read an interview with the lead singer here:Iona is not Catholic but since they are more or less into “Celtic Spirituality”, they make frequent reference to St Columba, and some of their lyrics sound fairly Catholic… They are truly awsome IMO and my favorite musical artists (note that this is Iona, the British-based Celtic-influenced progressive rock band, not Iona the US-based traditional Celtic band!)
Beckyann mentioned Ceili Rain… their lead singer at least is Catholic. They’re pop rock with a Celtic flavor… very upbeat themes.
Switchfoot is excellent, don’t know if they’re Catholic. Certainly big on detachment from the material world.
And of course there’s Nick Alexander … what a hoot!![]()
