Can anyone name a few? I’m immersed in a debate with someone from the Apostolic faith and i’m racking my brain. He’s made a comment that we catholics are closer to satanism than Christianity. Which I guess shouldn’t shock me…

He made a comment earlier that we should pray to God- and leave the saints to rest in peace. Which makes me wonder- most christian faiths recognise certain Catholic saints as well. If he believes in saints- and a few of those happen to be Catholic- how is that even possible- since we aren’t christian at all. Jesus said “a house divided against itself can’t stand”…

“The Apostolic Church” What on earth is that?

I would ask your friend by what authority he judges and condemns his brothers in Christ. Ask him if anger and hatred toward brother Christians is a Christian virtue.

Might ask him what that cloud of witnesses (Hebrews 12:1) that surround is supposed to do. Are they dead witnesses? Silent witnesses? If they do indeed witness, to Whom is it?

Sometimes, you cannot lift him up - he can only drag you down. It is good to pray and allow the Holy Spirit to act upon him, but be careful in your dealings with him, as he is preaching division.

Here’s a short response you can give.

Matthew 22: 23-33 Teaches us that God is the God of the living. The faithful dead are alive with God. If the faithful dead (Saints) are alive, then we are welcome to ask them to intercede for us, just as we ask our friends and relatives to intercede for us. The problem your friend has probably comes from a faulty understanding of the very “to pray.” Historically, “to pray,” has simply meant “to ask,” or “to entreat.” When we “pray” to Christ, or to God the Father, or to Mary and the Saints, we are asking them to intercede on our behalf. Unfortunately, in modern Protestantism, “to pray,” has come to be synonymous with “to worship,” so when we talk about “praying” to the Saints, they interpret it as “worshiping” the Saints.

Revelation shows us that the faithful dead offer our prays to God the Father throughout eternity. (Revelation 8: 3-4) So if they (“Holy Ones,” language used elsewhere in Revelation to denote the faithful dead), can offer our prayers to God, then it is not immoral to ask them to pray for us.

Matthew 17:3

Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus.

Protestants only like the bible. So here is 2 saints not just recognized by churches, but by the bible itself.

I fear I don’t really know what he is! LoL

I don’t know him- he commented on a catholic fabebook page and I “corrected” a few if his misconceptions about Catholicism (or at least I tried). When I mentioned Martin Luther- this was his response (maybe you can all help me determine what he is).
“As martin luther was way far from the truth catholics are way far from the truth too when you read the Bilble you figure out that churchs are really misleading the gospel by their practices and their sacraments our church has to be apostilical not catholic not orthodox nor protestant but APOSTOLIC”

We’ve been going back and forth calmly- and short of comparing us to Satanists- he’s been kind… but everytime I post anything in the Catholic defence- he deflects to a different topic… he talks in circles. It’s making me dizzy.

That is how it works!

I am guessing he is like an independent guy? He read the bible and is himself an “apostle” idk I can’t keep up, but his bible mentions sound like the many “Holy Spirit told ME the right way” Ask a group of them why they all disagree if the Holy Spirit gave them the answer and let the circle talking begin! Lol.

I’ve asked him that not once- but TWICE! No answer! LoL
It drives me mental- I feel like I’ve made some good points- but they’ve been wasted! Drats! Haha

Could just be troling you too lol. Sone people do that for fun.

Stil good opportunity to toss out info

Facebook. The biggest scourge on society and like candy to trolls.
You shouldn’t have engaged him in the first place. These people are not looking for truth. They are looking to lure people AWAY from the faith.

I don’t disagree with you. I tapered off on facebook quite a bit, but I find myself taking part in discussions from time to time with random people- usually about Christianity and Catholicism. I tend to stay away from the overly hateful people- I have no patience for people like that, but occasionally you find someone respectful of your beliefs and willing to just compare notes. I find those discussions helpful- they help me put my lessons to practice. Does that make sense?

To respond to the bolded part, I would work on politely and lovingly showing him quotes from the Church fathers about how their teachings and practices match our practices today and how the word “Catholic” is used in these quotes to refer to a well established Church. Also, this person places an important emphasis on the apostolicity of the Church, yet rejects that same One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. I would show him exactly how our Church can be traced all the way back to the apostles. I would also suggest you pray the Rosary for his conversion.

In theory, yes. But I don’t have “random” people on my FB page. I have my old choir members, and parishioners, and I mostly read, seldom comment except for things like “oh your new baby is so cute!”

Maybe you should filter your page. 🤷

Identity theft! The Catholic Church **IS **the Apostolic Church! (though I will concede, a few other bodies do have valid apostolic succession)

Oh, I only have people I know on FB. This was a sharednpost- from a Catholic website page. On it, many people were committing on the image shared and that’s where he posted a kindy worded, yet somewhat inflammatory comment (claiming we are closer to satan than to Christ). I respect people’s beliefs… I recognize that Christians are our brothers and sisters in Christ, that have not been given all of the info. I had to comment- I felt drawn to… just to explain to him WHY we believe the things we do. I hate knowing there are people out there who think we’re in league with satan, it’s unacceptable.

Thank God I read your comment before taking my first sip of coffee- your “identity theft” comment had me LoL!

When conversing with him- I actually posted the definition for him (he didn’t comment).

of or relating to the Apostles.

“apostolic writings”

of or relating to the pope, especially when he is regarded as the successor to St. Peter.

I actually will do that, thanks for the suggestion. I’m not sure mu words are reaching him- but he’s communicating nonetheless. I addressed his concern this morning about his “mariolatry” claim. I’m happy my lessons are being put to good use! He’s not the only one seeing them, so are te other catholics commenting on the page… I see it as helpful for everyone.

My next rosary will be for him.

He would have been unfriended by me with that “closer than Satan” uncharitable and inflammatory remark.
That’s the thing with FB. It gives people license to say whatever they want, no filter, no manners.

In Scripture it says that sometimes you have to dust off your sandals and walk away.
God bless you for trying, but I can’t deal with people like that.
🙂

He isn’t a friend of mine- he’s just someone who commented on a public FB page post. Other than that comment, he’s been really kind. I have no doubt he’s a well meaning, kind person. He knows what he knows because it’s what he’s been taught. He doesn’t understand catholicism. I just see it as an oportinity to correct some of his misconceptions. Let God help him hear what He wants him to hear:) If he gets rude, or respectful, I’ll end the convo with him.

You’re welcome. 🙂 I’m sure your posts are helping someone, and you’re helping to clear up this guy’s misconceptions. Keep it up!
