Catholic School subsidy?

Our friend’s husband has been laid off and cannot afford the tuition payment until he gets re-employed. The child has been attending Catholic school since pre-k and is now in High school. The child is well behaved, religious, but not a straight a student, though the child tries-so an academic merit award is not possible. What are the options out there? This is in the US. Should the friend call the diocese or the school to see what is possible? To remove the child and place in a public school would be too much of a shock as the child has been pretty much sheltered.

If your friend is having financial difficulties, I would certainly contact the school first…my children’s school always sent a notice home to all families stating, that if there was a financial situation to not let it be a deterrent for sending a child back the next year (k-8 though). I know Catholic High Schools can be very expensive, however, I believe the diocese should have a financial assistance form to fill out (at least that’s how it is for k-8). Sometimes if there are positions available and that might take care of the tuition problem, but that depends on the school too.

In any case, I would just go to the school and explain the situation and they would be able to give your friend the options that are out there. Oh, there are also some Catholic home school programs too, if the high school doesn’t work out! I have several friends who Catholic home school and are very successful with it! You just have to go online and see what’s out there. There is still tuition, but not as much.

I would definitely speak to the DRE of the school… our parish has two schools and the vast majority of student tuition comes from wealthier parishes (we are a very, very poor parish and our students, while winning tons of awards in state competitions, come from very, very poor families). I am CERTAIN that some sort of arrangement can be made. Your friend should just contact the DRE explain the circumstances.
