Catholic Stereotypes

All priests are pedophiles, and it’s because they are forced to be celibate.

Some Protestant once told me that the only reason Catholics forbid birth control was because their main goal was for all Catholics to have as many babies as possible and increase the Catholic population.

Yeah… I guess that explains why we have celibate priests too!:doh2:

None.

In fact, I can’t remember the last time I was offended by someone mocking my religion. I usually just laugh it off.

what I find annoying are former Catholics who complain about the guilt they grew up with.
Somebody forgot to let them in on the secret of reconciliation.
Got to support the Catholics Come Home ad campaign.

Also, does anyone know where the “Catholic guilt” stereotype came from? I always wondered about that.

The most annoying stereotype from my subjective point of view consists in repeating all sorts of claims without verification–but at the same time with a firm belief and little willingness to question the claim.
Stereotype that bothers me: Catholics haven’t read the Bible. (Maybe you Cradle Catholics haven’t, but some of us are converted Protestants, and read the Bible before we converted! :p)
Didn’t you all convert *because *you read the Bible, anyway? 😛

I have always wondered that myself! I always think that if someone FEELS guilty that it is their own admission that they actually did do something wrong–they just don’t like feeling that way though. Hence, blame the Church because they made “the rules.” I don’t believe that anyone can make you feel guilty for something you did not do.

Catholics are not Christians.
Catholics are not baptized. (Because infant baptism does not count.)
Catholics are going to Hell. (Because they are not baptized. See above.)
Catholic prayer is all vain repetition.
Catholics worship Satan.
Catholics are brainwashed.

But the most offensive belief seems to be unspoken: Catholics are pacifists. (Not!)
:blackeye:

I heard this criticism once: The Catholic Church is to sex what the anorexic and morbidly obese are to food. Unhealthily obsessed over a natural thing. I don’t fully agree with that, but I can see where one can make that argument.
??? Just about everybody in the Western world EXCEPT the Catholic Church is unhealthily obsessed with sex. The Pope and bishops actually mention sex very rarely. But it’s the only thing that the secular media report them on.

Funny thing is, the same people who talk about a so-called “Catholic guilt complex” can very often be heard condemning the Catholic Church for being too forgiving and not emphasising guilt ENOUGH, as in “The Church encourages Catholics to sin with gay abandon knowing that they can have it all wiped clean in Confession”.

Another one:
All Catholic women are actually sex goddesses (becasue we are so restrained, that when we go crazy, we go CRAZY). 😃 That one gets me dates. 😃

Since I’ve joined the apologetics movement, honestly I see all of these stereo types as a wonderous oppertunity to expose a Protestant Christian to the fullness of the truth of the church established by Christ him self 🙂

I really get upset every time I hear terrible comments made about Our Lady which aren’t true!

The one that most annoys me is vicious bigotry disguised as “tolerance”, such as “I don’t understand how anyone could rationally conclude that any of that nonsense that the Church teaches is true, but please, don’t let that stop you from being a good Catholic if that’s what helps you cope with life”.
In other words “Catholics are idiots who unqestioningly belive whatever they are told because they are afraid of facing up to reality, so they pretend to belive and base every action of their lives around doctrines which any rational person can see are fairytales invented to control them”.

This is an interesting point and brings to mind statements from several people I’ve met who have left the Church. Upon hearing that I am Catholic, they often state “I use to be a good Catholic until I saw the light.” This usually brings my reply that they couldn’t have been that damned good a Catholic since they left the Church followed by a quick change of the subject.
