I like it. 👍 I bought ‘The Catholic Bible Personal Study Edition’ by Oxford instead of the ‘Catholic Study Bible’. The new NABRE version of the ‘Catholic Study Bible’ did not change the reading guide to reflect the changes in the new revised translation of the NAB (NABRE). The 'Catholic Bible personal Study Edition did make this revision of its study guide to reflect these changes. ‘The Catholic Bible Personal Study Edition’ is ‘billed’ as a beginner study (for RCIA, etc.), but I found out that there is not a big difference in their nearly 500 page reading guides in the front of these Bibles. I found 'The Catholic Bible Personal Study Bible easier to use, and it put a lot more info at your finger tips on the pages of the Bible. Both Bibles use ‘historical-critical’ footnotes and reading guide commentary, so if you do not like this kind of biblical scholarship, you want to avoid these study Bibles. I would advise to check them out in person (if possible) before investing in one of these Bibles.

As I haven’t canvassed the US I will take your word for that.
Many knowledgeable posters in these forums have often said that the notes in the NAB are at best terrible and at worst verging on heresy. I don’t think any of the scholars would advise using the NAB as a study Bible.

The RSV language is dignified…and there`s no “inclusive” language.

Many Catholic biblical scholars over the years 1970-2011 have been involved in the translation and the formation of the notes of the NAB/RE.

The knowledgeable scholars (that is not me) in these forums agree the notes in the NAB are bad and would never recommend this Bible for Bible study. I don’t know if the notes have been changed in the RE or if it’s just the translation that has been changed.
 
I’ve read some reviews on it and it apparently has a lot of liberal footnotes. I would recommend the Ignatius study Bible instead.

I agree the the Ignatius Catholic Study Bible (NT) is very good, that does not make the Catholic Study Bible bad, they have a different type of notes, Ignatius’ notes lean more theological and the Catholic Study Bible are more historical-critical. You may personally not like them, and that also does not make them bad.

When I said that many scholars in these forums say they are bad what I meant is that the notes in many instances are actually wrong.

I agree. I have both, and I really don’t like the notes in the NAB. I also have some problems with the translation, such as Gen2:7 “…the Lord God formed man out of the clay of the ground, and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living being.” (should be living soul…) It’s a small thing, but there are several like that.

The problem is that the Ignatious Study bible is only out in the NT. Still waiting for the old!!

The OT is suppose to be ready by 2014 or 2015 at the latest.

PLENTY of Catholic like the NAB and it is the translation the Church gave us to use in Liturgy in the United States. The translation is made specifically for the kind of English spoken here to make it the most understandable with all notes provided by the Church for our guidance.

I fail to see how one can claim to be loyal to the Church and diss the Bible the Church has given us to use.

I don’t think posters on a mesage board know better than the Church or the USCCB, new.usccb.org/bible/books-of-the-bible/ where we find the NAB online.

The Ignatius RSV CE II is one of very few Bibles preferred for serious Biblical study and use by seminarians and theologians. The NAB is not. The notes for the Ignatius RSV are written by orthodox Catholics Scott Hahn and Curtis Mitch.

The NAB should be replaced for all uses with the Ignatius RSV, and soon.

The NAB translation is not a good one which is why the NABRE had to be produced.
The notes to the NAB are not good, often wrong, and sometimes verging on the heretical.
The people who are criticizing the NAB are theologians and bible scholars.
The OP is asking about a good bible for bible study. The NAB is not a good bible for that purpose.
