I was recently going through some old boxes of mine that I brought back from my parent’s house and found a wonderful surprise - a very old missal that I received from my grandparents for my first communion! It is the 1956 Catholic Sunday Missal and Simplified Prayerbook, Confratertiny Version, in a black leather sewn-in zipper cover. It has two Nihil Obstats, an Imprimi Potest, and an Imprimatur. It is also in virtually mint condition. Can anyone tell me anything about this particular missal? Is it a good version to have (I mean, I love it, but was it considered a good version at the time or rare or anything?)

Also, I’m aware that there would be some slight changes between this version of the missal and the indult Tridentine mass that exists now. Could someone tell me what the differences are, and the various alterations that the Tridentine mass went through? (I hear all this talk on here about FSSP and SSPX and so on, and using this and that version of the Tridentine mass, so I just wondered if someone could put up a relatively simple list? I’ve never been to a Tridentine mass.)

Hi. Before I answer could you tell me:
Is there a feast of St. Joseph the Worker on March 1?
In the kalendar are there any semi-double/semiduplex feasts?
*
At the Holy Week is there an instruction on Maunday Thursday to omit the Last Gospel of St. John and the blessing? Or for Palm Sunday does the Gospel for the Mass start with the story of Gethsemane or does it have the story also of the woman who washed His feet?
Is there an Octave mentioned for Corpus Christi or the Epiphany?*

  1. No feast of St. Joseph the Worker
  2. Does not appear to have any semi-double/semiduplex feasts
  3. It says, “The following Preface is said on days that have no Preface of their own, until Maundy Thrusday.” Nothing about the Last Gospel of St. John and the blessing though.
  4. Palm Sunday Gospel only includes Gethsemane
  5. Not actually sure what the Octave is, since I’m not very familiar with the Tridentine mass, but there are none listed for Corpus Christi or Epiphany.

Ok, sorry one last thing just to make sure: What rank is given under the Sixth Sunday after Pentecost?

Also, are you familiar with the parts of the Tridentine Mass?

It is a pre-Vatican II missal made for children to follow along with the Mass, go to confession, pray the Rosary, etc. It should not have anything complicated, such as Maundy Thursday instructions. It might have simplified Gospel readings, even Epsitles. It no doubt has plenty of color pictures, done with some realism. The last couple of pages or first couple pages should have “Prayer Before A Crucifix” somplace.

I am not completely familiar with the parts of the Tridentine Mass, but I’ve got a vague idea. As far as the rank, however, you’ve lost me there. It simply says Green in parentheses, which I assume refers to the color of the liturgical season? The listing includes the indroit, collect, epistle, gradual, gospel, offertory, secret, communion, and postcommunion.

It has maybe 10 black and white illustrations, generally not full page. They are clearly from medieval illuminated manuscripts. It does NOT include the Prayer Before a Crucifix. The Gospels and Epistles are complete. It does have a LONG list of prayers in the back however (57 pages worth), including suggested morning and evening prayers, everyday prayers, the apostle’s creed, instructions concerning confession, various litanies, the mysteries of the rosary, grace, the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, devotions to St. Joseph, devotions to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, I could go on and on…

OK. Are the pages divided into Latin on one side and English on the other? Or is the order of Mass in English with what seems to be paraphrasing?

If it’s Latin on one side and English on the other, odds are good it’s made for a kid about 9 or 10, and is known as a Confirmation Missal. It’s still a missal that would be purchased for a gift, but it’s a “big boy” missal, not a “baby” missal with pretty pictures.

Tell me you’re going to keep it and not sell it on eBay…

Latin on one side, English on the other (using the Confraternity version of the Bible). Definately a Confirmation missal then.

There is no possible way I would sell it! Not only is it a wonderful gift from my grandparents, but it’s historically interesting, full of wonderful prayers, and a really well-made beautiful item!
