Catholic Support of Episcopal Monasteries?

May a Roman Catholic become an Associate with an Episcopal Monastery in order to receive assistance in following the Rule of St. Benedict (who we know was a Catholic) in their life? It is a similar program to becoming a Catholic Benedictine Oblate, but the Episcopal Monastery location is closer to home than the Catholic one, which makes the Association work, as yearly retreats are suggested.

Financial Contributions are welcomed, which means one is to offer some monetary support in return for the Association with the Monastery.

Is this all permissable to a Roman Catholic?

As a Catholic, my preference would be to be an Oblate at a Catholic monastery. When I go to the abbey I like to be able to join in ALL the prayers including the Mass. For me, going to an Episcopal monastery and not being able to receive the Eucharist while I was there would leave me feeling very empty.

I would find it very difficult to be formed in the life of St Benedict when you could only experience a very shallow form of it.**

Well I suppose if one did go on retreat… it would be necessary to support them by paying room and board??? However I would rather save up my money and go less often to a Roman Catholic one where I could have access to the fullness of the tradition???

• I would guess that it could be assuming they weren’t anti catholic… however … why not ask your parish priest???*

PureDzire-Would that monastery be Holy Cross, in Esopus, NY?

I’ve never visited there-only passed it by-but I’ve seen the sign while driving.

I’d rather be supporting good Catholic monasteries, IMO.

Perhaps, a devotion to monasticism in both Episcopal and Roman Catholic Churches will be just one manifestation of an appeal to a common spiritual tradition lying behind the sad division, which can only result in reconciliation (thought we may not live to see it).

As an ecumenical move, I was a member of the Canterbury Club in college. I learned a lot about them, and made some lifelong friends.

Believe it or not, any “friendship” move from a Catholic is regarded as a great blessing by a Protestant. We’re truly seen as “Living Jesus” in this case.

If the Episcopalian monastery is the only place you have to go, then you’ll have to discern how much support to give them. By your just being there could say more than your money ever could.
