Hello. My husband and I are trying to find out what the Church teaches about using Lupron for endometriosis pain. My doctor is a Catholic but has encouraged things in the past (invitro) that we know are against Catholic teaching. I have had one laparomy in 2005 and a laparoscopy in Dec. of last year. She wants me to take lupron for three months to shrink the endo and jumpstart my ovary (the other ovary was removed in 2005). She thinks this could help us conceive (infertile thus far). Lupron will stop ovulation and we are concerned about acting selfishly and going against the church. Any (name removed by moderator)ut would be appreciated. Merry Christmas to all!

I dated a girl you had endo and a history of cysts and was using depo to stop ovulation which greatly reduced the risk of more cysts and took care of the endo pain. When I spoke to a very holy and knowledgeable priest about this he said that using something that causes infertility in a case like this is acceptable since the purpose is a valid medical reason to improve your health and the infertility is a side effect.
As long as it isn’t being used for ABC reasons and you have a valid medical reason to use it, which you do, it is okay.

I’m sure someone will tell you that no, you just have to deal with the pain because creating infertility is wrong (even though you said you are already infertile), but in my experience and from the advice I have received from holy men, in your situation this is fine.

I hope you get better and are able to conceive.
God Bless

Amelia, Merry Christmas to you . I would check with your priest or diocese or with the National Catholic Bioethics Center. Or all three.

The NCBC does email or telephone consults.

My take on it is that it is a medicine that you are using to treat a disease . The iffy part if that you are intending to prevent ovulation. Probably is overuled by your overal intent to treat the endo.

There are allowances fo use of such things for medical treatment. However, since every case is unique, I agree with seatuck that you should consult with the National Catholic Bioethics Center and seek some spiritual guidance in this matter. There may be consideratins for how you live out your married life during those times.

I applaud you for being thoughtful about this. Many people would just take the drug and not give it a second thought. You are in my prayers.

Thanks to all of you for your advice! It is appreciated! God Bless You All and Merry CHRISTmas!!!
