I used the NIV to cut and paste. I apologize. I usually read from RSV:CE

"1 A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse;
from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.

2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on him—
the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and of power,
the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD -

3 and he will delight in the fear of the LORD.
He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes,
or decide by what he hears with his ears;

4 but with righteousness he will judge the needy,
with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth.
He will strike the earth with the rod of his mouth;
with the breath of his lips he will slay the wicked.

5 Righteousness will be his belt
and faithfulness the sash around his waist.

6 The wolf will live with the lamb,
the leopard will lie down with the goat,
the calf and the lion and the yearling [a] together;
and a little child will lead them.

7 The cow will feed with the bear,
their young will lie down together,
and the lion will eat straw like the ox.

8 The infant will play near the hole of the cobra,
and the young child put his hand into the viper’s nest.

9 They will neither harm nor destroy
on all my holy mountain,
for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD
as the waters cover the sea. "

My question is: How should Roman Catholics interpret this passage? Will there actually be a time when nature exists in peaceful harmony as described here by the inspired prophet? I’ve always been taught that the “wickedness” and “savage” aspects of nature, specifically the predatory aspect of beasts, are actually morally neutral actions/creations. Will there actually be a time when Christ establishes peace on earth, where vipers, lions, wolves, and other wild beasts will pose no threat to little children, adults, and other animals? Or is Christ’s kingdom purely spiritual? Or both?

Well clearly this passage can be read symbolically of what occurs by the Gospel. But I have heard people suggest Heaven will have animals

Vicious predators co-existing peacefully with their prey is not something I can find in the New Testament. If it’s symbolic, what exactly does it symbolize? Who are these metaphorical lions, vipers, and wolves?

One commentary I read is
Ver. 6. Wolf. Some explain this of the Millennium. (apud St. Jerome) (Lactantius vii. 24.) — But the more intelligent understand, that the fiercest nations shall embrace the gospel, and kings obey the pastors of the Church. (Calmet) — Lead. Or “drive,” as the word is used by Festus. (Haydock)

Maybe, maybe not. The Catholic church doesn’t teach otherwise.

This Scripture passage is speaking of the eschatological peace which is the everlasting peace that happens after the Last Judgment. It is explaining this perfect peace in human terms which we can relate to.

We do not know whether there will be immortal animals on the new peaceful earth that is created after Jesus’ Second Coming and Last Judgment. But, we do know that if there are no animals, we will not miss them since we know that we will have our complete fulfillment and happiness in God who is Love.

Its a symbolic (or literal - we don’t know which) return to the state of life in the garden of eden before man’s fall with Adam’s sin. If you look in Genesis, animals and mankind were all “vegetarians” until the fall - thus, presumably, not predators.

This is an image of the completed work of the Messiah (second coming) when we will all be redeemed from sin and we will find God’s peace/shalom.

Some take this literally (as an earlier reply suggested) as a perfect peaceful world during a literal millenial kingdom. The Church has refuted the idea of a millenial kingdom (Christ reigning on earth for 1,000 years) and rather teaches that the 1,000 years (indended to imply a long time, not literally exactly 1,000 years) referred to in Revelation is happening now through the kindom on earth (the Church) and Christ is reigning now, in perfect peace, with the saints, in heaven. His return will be for the judgement and the new heaven and new earth will be created at that time.

Blessings,

Brian

I agree. 👍 This future everlasting peace is sometimes referred to as “eschatological peace.”

The “times of the Gentiles” (which includes the time in which we live right now Luke 21:24,) is the 1000 years of Jesus’ rule with His saints in heaven Revelation 20:6 while He waits for the time appointed for His Second Coming. He is ruling in heaven right now. [1 Peter 3:21-22](http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1 Peter+3:21-22&version=NKJV)

Hebrews 12:1-2
Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

This “cloud of witnesses” are the saints who are ruling with Christ right now in heaven during this “thousand years” which is also the “times of the Gentiles” and they will rule while Satan is chained during this same “thousand years.”

The “times of the Gentiles” is the time period after Jesus’ ascension (which includes the destruction of Jerusalem and of the Jewish temple in 70 A.D.) and it will continue until shortly before His Second Coming. Revelation 20:2-8 Since some of the Jews have now returned to Israel and to Jerusalem, the “times of the Gentiles” is drawing to a close.

1000 years is symbolic for a long period of time 2 Peter 3:8-9 and should not be taken literally. Satan’s power is limited/chained/bound during these “times of the Gentiles,” but Satan’s full power will be given back to him when it is time for him to “help” the Antichrist.

After the Second Coming, Jesus abolishes all rule. [1 Corinthians 15:24](http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1 Corinthians+15:24&version=NKJV)

There is no need for “rule” in heaven because we will all be one with God and abide in Him perfectly and we will worship God forever.

The reason that Satan’s power is chained for the times of the Gentiles is so that everyone throughout the whole world is given the opportunity to hear and believe in the gospel.

Matthew 28:18-20
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.

Matthew 24:14
And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.
