Did you study th Catechism of the Catholic Church or the Baltimlre Catechism, or the new American Catechism, or another one?I read and studied it in Catholic School … I dont remember it dealing with scapulars.
Anyway, wrt to the scapulars, I see that the way we talk about it is this: Matt wants to join the police force but is afraid he will not pass the physical because he’s not very strong. So his friend tells him to get a set of weights.
So Matt buys the weights, but does not even open the box. Do the weights do him any good? No. He had to get them and use them.
That is just to illustrate how we use language. It’s not the wearing of the scapular but the using of the scapular, as a reminder, as a focus for prayer, as a point of humility, an acceptance of oir weaknes and oir need for Heavenly help.
Another thing to consider is that your grandmother was, first, teaching you as she was taught, but she was raised in a different world, one that was less agressively skeptical and jn need of personal understanding. Secondly, she was teaching you as a child. She wasn’t going to give you the type of explanation you want now, because you would not have been able to jnderstand.
